Need some advise on FAC dampner
« on: October 04, 2015, 10:32:34 PM »
I installed the FAC dampner in my 89 Lemans with Wirth springs. I verified that the part numbers were the proper ones listed on the MG Cycle web site. Before installing I noticed that the FAC dampner are a little over ½ inch shorter that the Bitubo dampners. I also put in 50cc of atf fluid as was previously recommended. I took a ride and noticed a loud scraping when the forks compressed.  At a stop holding the front brake and compressing the forks it sounds as though the springs are scraping in one of the tubes.   Is this normal with these dampners and are the FAC dampners supposed to be shorter than the Bitubo dampners.

Last winter I swapped my original dampers for FAC + Wirth  springs on my 850 T3 I do not have any scraping sounds from my dampers.

How much play is  there between the spring and the forktubes ?

Did you use the locking nuts that came with the FAC dampers or the locking nuts from the old dampers? Reference #37 in the below diagram. The ones that come with the FAC dampers are 13 mm hex and too large for the springs to slide over properly. I reuse the ones from the old dampers which are 11? mm and allow the springs to slip over them easily.

I used the ones that came with the FAC dampners.  Guess I will take them back out. Should the FAC dampners be shorter than the Bitubos.
