I suspect they look at a lot of things -- time of day/night; slab or twisties; weather (maybe) and such along with bare speed.

That's the nice thing about doing the distance runs on this side of the Mississippi.  Speed limits are high enough to make a shorter duration of it.  And, towns are further apart so less worries about traffic.

You can get away with a large tolerance if you make sure and take your breaks *before* you gas up.  ten minutes of sitting will have a huge affect on your average.

Hmmm.  Good strategy.  We did that, but it was because we could top off the tanks more if we rolled for the highway immediately.  Never thought of it as a way of slowing the recorded pace . . .
