Need help identifying what I lost off my 2011 8V Norge
« on: October 12, 2015, 08:32:00 AM »
During the last 50 miles or so of my return trip from Talamina my red triangle of death would come on occasionally when at idle at a stop along with the oil symbol. Stopped and gave a quick look over and checked the oil level which was fine and did not see any thing amiss so I road on home. This morning I go back out to look things over with a clear head and notice oil/dirt film and then oil over the left side of the engine but still have normal oil level on the stick. Then spotted the threaded hole or whatever is missing and apparently the source of the wayward oil. It is directly below where Moto Guzzi is stamped on the header pipe.

I'm pretty sure nothing belongs there.

I'm also pretty sure it's a threaded boss that does not go all the way through, into the block.

I don't believe that it's the source of your oil leak.

I'm with Michael.

I believe that is just a mounting point for various bits when the block is used in a Stelvio or Griso, or ????. I'm pretty sure that is a sealed blind hole.

You will need to pull the skins loose, and look for a leak elsewhere. Maybe the timing sensor in front of the left cylinder is leaking down to there.

If the oil level is good, a leak wouldn't cause the red triangle and oil light would it?

the breather cover on the left side of timing chest should get looked at, after you replace the oil pressure switch that is the likely cause for the light, and maybe the leak too.

Where is the oil pressure switch located? The triangle came on just for a few seconds with the bike at idle, a couple of times during about the last 100 miles of the ride. There was no visible oil mist then. During the last five miles it came on for a bit each of the three times I had to stop. Since Mike mentioned the switch I wonder if the bike shaking at idle was effecting the switch compared to the smoother running at speed and also continuing it let more oil through. It seems that most of the oil mist must have come out close to the end of the ride so guessing it was getting evan looser.
Otherwise the motor always sounded completely normal and continued to run great.
Hope to tear into it tomorrow. Have too much going on today.
Thanks for the responses.

As noted by others, the hole is there for when other things are mounted on the outside. I'm convinced one of the reasons why the mounting for the Norge's plastic is so odd is that they were trying their best to use mount points that already existed on the block.

I'm with those who suspect the oil pressure sensor as both the source of the leak and the cause for the red triangle. Let me know if you need one of my nifty oil pressure sensor wiring kits!

I agree with IT Sec,   May be a minor leak from the oil pressure sensor. It will get worse and blow out,as mine did and the bike was unrideable. Cow of a job to get to the sensor, tank off, air filter off. Make sure you replace it with the factory upgrade kit. About $40. Mine was replaced at 13K. Will inspect again at 20K.

Where is the oil pressure switch located?

It is forward of and above the jug on the left side of the engine; it is round with a large (21mm I think) hex for your wrench - and no space to actually do so. Don't confuse it with the diamond-shaped sensor nearby, which is the crank sensor (and also a possible leak source, but less likely).

There are two approaches to get to the sensor. You can remove the tank and the airbox and reach in from behind, or you can remove the left exhaust header and reach in from the front. Either way is not easy at all. If you are changing from the old design (nail-head) sensor to the new (spade connector) unit, go in from the top, as you'll need to change the connector attached to the wiring harness.

On the 8V, I thought it was under the alternator? But I've not touch one on a Norge 8V.

The location isn't much changed from one to the other - though the change in the alternator makes the one on the 8V even more annoying to get to, I'm told. It's not so much the position of the sensor as it is the stuff around and above it...
