High mileage roller 8v.
« on: November 29, 2015, 06:05:48 PM »
Has anyone racked up big miles on a rollered 8v Yet? I'm considering a '13 Stelvio with low miles on it and would  like to know how their holding up. All '13s are rollers right??

There is a bloke in Oz who travels around with his dog raising money for charity, (Google 'Tex and Bundy' and it'll probably come up.) a couple of years ago JSG gave him a Stelvio. Last time I was talking to Danniel he'd just done a service on it. Can't remember what the exact kms were but it was definitely in excess of 150,000. All it had ever had is 'Book Servicing' and it gets ridden pretty much every day to places all over Oz, including remote communities full of snaggle-toothed, dope-growing, banjo-twanging, mouth-breathing inbreds at the end of dirt tracks 400km from the back end of bumfuque!

Thanks for the reply Pete. Good to know the newer 8vs are holding up  well. Sounds like Tex and Bundy has been through east Kentucky( I live in CENTRAL Ky.).

I've got 32K miles on mine in a bit over three years.  It's a '12 NTX, built in Feb '12, bought in June, '12.

Yeah, but people like that give a state character.  North Carolina is broke out in character like smallpox.

The only part that surprised me was the banjo.

I had 37,000 miles on mine (2012 NTX) when I traded it in. One Clutch replaced at 20,000 and another replacement was imminent. Steering head bearings replaced and front rotors needed replacement. Mine was a flat tappet model and with all the internet buzz about that I threw in the towel and cried uncle. Love the character of the bike but I am unwilling to put up with that much maintenance.

I am curious to hear about the cause(s) of the first clutch going belly up at 20,000 miles, and the replacement beginning to go at 37,000.  Bad seals causing clutch slippage?  Mechanical issues with the clutch itself?

I guess I'm getting old. I remember 32k on a Guzzi as 'finally broken in', rather than time to rebuild.

Springs in the pressure plate became dislodged and were fix'n to pop out (metal fatigue in the retaining tabs). Also throw out bearing and rod were worn beyond specs. First clutch replaced under warranty. Price quoted for second clutch not covered (out of warranty period) was $1200.00. Removal of engine from bike is necesary to access clutch.
