Q's about transmission bearing replacement for 01 Jackal
« on: November 17, 2015, 03:27:20 PM »
The trans from my 01 Jackal was recently removed from the bike and I want to replace the phenolic cage bearings that are in the trans with something a little more durable. I also want to shim the gears while I have it apart and take care of anything else in there that may need attention. Since I don't know anything about this I thought that I would start here first asking for some advice as to where I might obtain the bearings, shims and anything else that I may need. This should be a fun, interesting winter project sure to provide lots of entertainment. Thanks for the help.

MG has the shim washers for the shift drum. That's what you will be shimming. Don't get it too tight and make sure it shifts fourth and fifth without any trouble. I could explain that but won't now. When you get to that point give me a call.

BRC bearing supply can cross reference to metal cages or any bearing supply for that matter

I've had a LOT of trouble finding the metal caged bearings near me. The stupid part is that I found that they are made by SKF in a factory 4 miles from where I work.

I did a transmission earlier this year and Dilliw send me the bearings. They were 3205 E/C3. No idea where he sourced those.

The question seems to be whether it's the poly material that fails or the fact that the OEM bearings are not max fill.  Either one of these solutions solves both issues:

ZKL 3205 New Force C3 is the old design, 14 ball with a serpentine metal cage.  There is good quantity of these on the ZKL US website and you can find them in distribution for $20-$25 each.  Czech made (maybe).

SKF 3205 E/C3 and MRC 5205M C3 appear to be the same bearing (they are the same company).  It’s a 13 ball, max fill c3 with of a  newer design using a metal cage designed for  high speed applications.  I got them here (not the quickest ship) for $72/each.

The SKF is probably overkill but I went with them.  Thanks goes to the Husky webboard as the older kickers use the same bearing.

If people have problems I can supply 3205AC 3's with 14 balls per race and a filling slot and serpentine cage.

Hey guys, thanks for the info. Still doing research to see what I will need (special tools etc) but am clearing a space on the workbench now to get started.
