Rubber Boots or Covers
« on: December 06, 2015, 06:48:55 PM »
My V7 Stone has some linkages on the underneath of the frame, towards the back, that constantly get grotty with sand, road dirt, thrown up mud, etc.  Bad enough so that every couple of weeks I'm under the bike, cleaning the crud off, and spraying more grease on these joints.

I'd like to rig up some kind of rubber boots or covers so that I could grease these pivot joints well, they would stay clean, and maybe I don't have to re-grease them again until valve adjustment time.  Or so I could ride all day in the rain without them getting gritty and the lube washed out.

The gear selector has two such ball joints I'd like to encase.   And then there's the end of the clutch cable at the top of the lever arm at the back of the clutch.

Any thoughts about rubber boots or enclosures that would work in these areas?

Maybe something like the Loops have on their brake cable?

Old inner tube cut into strips and zip ties , although Mr Mullendore's idea would probably be prettier .

Didn't some models of BMW Airheads have rubber boots over the shift linkage ends?

Another idea: replace the original open(?) joints with better quality sealed units?
