2009 Stelvio rear main seal housing oil leak
« on: December 12, 2015, 01:08:51 PM »
Hi guys I have oil leaking from the bell housing that I have lived with for 6 months I am now getting stuck in to it I have a new bearing / seal carrier as I have read that the recess for the o ring is shallower to put more pressure on the rubber I also remember reading that you should leave the paper gasket out when re assembling it please can someone clarify / confirm this for me, Many thanks, Jon.

Check the length of the two lower flange bolts by screwing them into the block until they bottom out and measure to make sure there is less thread exposed than the thickness of the flange. If there is? Use shorter bolts.

No gasket, just use a thin smear of Threebond 1211 making sure it doesn't get into the oil delivery dowel.

My 2009 had a leak and I fully expected to find the flange leaking. It turned out to be the plug where they bore for the cam chain shaft.
Just sayin', you never know what to expect.

Wayne, I'm living with exactly the same problem on my LM2, how did you cure your leak?

On the Stelvio 8 valve that plug for the cam shaft bore is screwed on and has an o-ring. I only had to replace the o-ring.
Actually, looking at it, it has something to do with the left cam chain tensioner.

On the LM2 of course, that is a pressed in plug. If you are 100% sure that is it, take a grinder to clean up the surface, and seal it with JB weld. Or get a new press in plug and with the proper tools, press it in.

Dilliw's EV Valdez was pouring oil from the clutch housing. I thought it was that plug, so I gooped it up. Nope. So I sprayed a powder on everything in the area, and pressurized the crankcase for a few minutes. Only then was I able to narrow down the spot that was leaking. It was the flange gasket.

Hi Guys, Just a recap when I removed the flange bolts they were only hand tight and definitely to long the holes seem to be deep enough but are not threaded all the way in so I put 20mm bolts back in in place of the 25mm ones. I guess these bikes are bordering on hand made (  I've been to the factory :-)) ) so we just have to put up with it problem is I like Guzzi's so much I am prepared to put up with it, I have a customer with a £125,000 Aston Martin and his roof leaks much worse than my engine !!!!, Jon.

The same thing happened to my '09 Griso.  It didn't leak until I had 16k miles on it.  The factory forget to change the bolt length for the new engine.  Oops!

Shouldn't leak.

Did you remove the flange and check the feed dowel length? Replace the o-ring? Delete the gasket? All these things have to be done otherwise it will still leak.

Yep I got a new flange in case the O ring groove was to deep on the original but it was identical apart from the 2 pins that have been deleted for some reason, Jon.
