Pro's and Con's of user names
« on: January 28, 2016, 12:57:13 PM »
All,

Just looking into the Pro's and Con's of user names.   When I setup my Wildguzzi account, if memory serves it did ask for my real name and also wanted a username and password, so I just made up a username.

Now, later on, am thinking that maybe using a real name as a user name might be a reasonable idea.   That way people people in real life don't have to do the user name to real name conversion.

Beyond the obvious, are there are any pro's and con's that I'm missing?   I understand that if a person said something out there their real name is on it and that might be a problem, but I don't usually have all that much to say so not real likely......

Well K250...

Since almost anything someone says on forums can be linked to the person who said it, no real pro/con I can see.

On WG you can use your real name or even change usernames. Up to each individual.

Anything that makes it a little harder for a crazy stranger on the internet to find me and kill me, even if it's simply another click or two, is non-trivial.

I just don't want anyone to search my name and read all those embarrassing posts and see those goofy pics I put up on the Honda Melody forum back in the day....

If you are in Chicago land, the Internet is probably the safest place to be.

We had a situation on WG a few months ago where a member , now banned , was threatening physical harm to a couple of us . More than likely it was just the ravings of a lunatic , or a fifteen year old boy , but one is never sure . The threatened members were probably in no real danger , but the lack of info did prevent some nasty Emails and letters . Not a matter of hiding behind a keyboard , hell , I know maybe fifty WG members in person , just a basic precaution .

Anytime any of you guys and gals met me at a Guzzi function, you had no problem knowing who I was.

Nah, anyone determined enough could track you down via your digital footprints if they really wanted. It's no use worrying about.

I use a moniker, and though not my full name, anyone with the knowledge of how to use google can find me. I am a real estate broker, therefore a public person. I use the same name on all the boards I belong to. Though I will speak my mind, I try not to make offensive or embarrassing posts!

I did the "user name" if only to keep search returns low. I'm not hiding from black helicopters (no need - as I'm effectively now invisible to them) but would rather professional returns not have the yammering I often offer on forums such as these.

To address this, sometime last year or earlier, I began to at least "sign" my posts with my first name.

Back when I joined I had a red truck, red head wife and my first Guzzi-a red MilleGT. Oh, and a BB Gun.  It just followed that I chose the redrider moniker. Now, the truck is long gone and several bikes added to the shed. Still red and you can call me Joe. None of us have been invisible since SSN's.
