Cleaning melted rain suit off of exhaust and fixing scratches
« on: January 05, 2016, 10:29:10 PM »
So I am asking more advice to fix the advice I already found on here :|

I found this thread: http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=47705.msg714718#msg714718

And since someone mentioned Aluminum Foil and Goo Gone and I had those handy I went for it. My own fault for not trying it in a hidden spot first I guess. It did get some of the rain suit off of pipe but left a lot of it on there. And the Aluminum foil despite being softer than the Chromed pipes on my V7, did scratch the pipes. Lots of little tiny scratches.

So now I'm ready to make some purchases to remedy this.

1) What can I use to get the pvc rain suit off of the pipes? (its on there pretty good since I left the suit drying not realizing it was touching)
2) What can I use to polish and buff out the scratches on the exhaust?

Easy Off oven cleaner. It is often recommended when ever this subject comes up.

Good luck,
Tex

Yep. Use the Easy Off Cold oven cleaner; spray it on, wait a few minutes, wipe it off.

Use a dedicated chrome polish or cleaner.  Any other polishing compound will leave the chrome hazy looking.

Yes, no polishing compound. Maybe try the chrome polish, but that's it. I think there's a good chance those scratches are there to stay, and the more you mess with it, the more chance that area will also become hazy.

Visit some detail shops and ask them to show you what would work. They've actually done it and can probably show you some real results.

Then you'll have a good idea of what to expect.

As you've also discovered, the softer materials wear the harder materials. That is one reason why the aluminum foil scratched things up.

You can use oven cleaner, just read what it is supposed to be used for and how it is applied and then pause and think about it. How did you get where you are now? Then proceed as you see fit.

I remove melted rainsuit or shoe soles with an MEK soaked rag.  It takes it right off and no chrome damage.  PPE is used, of course!

I concur on the chrome polish.
