More on Hamlin's shop
« on: May 12, 2016, 08:20:03 PM »
I needed new tires for my V7.  Got 3600 miles out of the OEM.  Jim recommended Michelin Pilot Activ.
I really disliked the OEM Sport Demon tires from day one.  They never felt planted and the front would wander all the time at any little thing.

After 250 miles the Michelin feel much better (to me).  I have a 25 mile loop I use for evaluating my bikes (and others) so I know it well and can concentrate on the set up of the bike and so forth.  So far so (very) good.

I got 8200 miles out of my Pirelli Demon rear, and probably had another 500.  Front was still decent.  I went with Pilot Actives as well, with heavy duty tubes.  Time will tell...

I just don't understand why some get so few miles out of tires.  I just changed OEM the Pirelli Sport Demon rear tire on my '16 V7II Stone.  I got 8200 miles out of it and probably could have made it to 9000 mi.  The front tire will probably last to about 10,000 mi., maybe more.  It's not like I tootle around at 30 mph, there are plenty of 65+ mph miles on the bike.  On the other hand, I don't do burnouts, deliberate skids, or wheelies.  I think Sport Demons feel and ride just fine, at least as well as the Lasertecs that came on my previous '13 V7.

I think body weight plays a role.  Mine was getting a flat spot as I live in flat-Jersey.

I was flush with the rear wear bars.  Go figure.  I do ring it's neck, though.  One of the reasons to love a small bike.  Flog it all day and your only doing 70!  On my Street 3 every time I looked it was 100mph plus.  WAY too much.  It had to go.

And I got all the way up there on 3+ gallons if gas, less than a tank.  52 MPG baby!

SWEET. I was talking with Jim about the PA's too.  But they will have to wait for a while.

It's hard to tell sometimes-new tires always feel better.  But, the Sport Demon tires always felt "unsure" of themselves.
As soon as I returned from CT picking up the bike I ran my loop to work on dialing in the suspension.  First thing I noticed was the wandering at the front.  Come to think of it, the day before we left to return home and went riding with Jim's friend on the KTM I thought the same thing.  Chalked it up to learning a new motorcycle but it turns out first impressions were correct.

Yesterday I felt much more comfortable leaning the bike way over and snaking thru some curves (the few we have here in WNY) at pace.
We'll see how it goes but for now it's better by a fair amount than it was.

Gerry, I'll be in CT June 1.

Jim, I'll be heading up to Bennington June 1.  I usually stop by the shop on my way to Rt 22.  When are you guys planning on getting up to the Bash?  I bet Jim takes the MSTR.  :bike-037:

We are doing some routine maintenance on the NORGE and installing a few extras.
I's imagine we don't get out of there until late afternoon, as always.

Matt will stop by and pester us to go at noon-won't happen.
