V7II Smart Phone USB Charging Socket
« on: January 28, 2016, 05:53:49 PM »
I just finished installing a USB charging socket to my 2016 V7II Stone.  I purchased the OEM USB Socket Kit Part # 2S000166 from AF1 for $71.35. The price seems high but it is a very nice piece of kit that connects securely under the seat and plugs into an existing socket (#52 on the V7II wireing diagram also located under the seat).  It all goes together seamlessly and with a 5ft USB cord run under the tank I now have a switched power charging source for my handlebar mounted iPhone 6+. I have used a Garmin Zuma GPS on my other motorcycle in the past but I much prefer using my phone with Google Maps and the Ridewithgps App and ridewithgps.com for creating scenic routes.  Ridewithgps.com allows you to use Google Earth/Google Maps and a computer to drop pins along any roads you want to travel so you can select roads and design routes or you can just put in a starting and ending point and let the program select a route for you (but I much prefer selecting my own roads to travel). You can select roads either in "terrain" mode or "satellite" mode. On the road you get turn by turn directions and you can also print out a cue sheet. On the road you can also zoom in and out for a satellite view of the surrounding areas so if you see an interesting side route you can zoom out to see how far and where the road leads to or you can find satellite views of lakes, rivers, parks, etc you might like to check out and which roads to take to get there. Almost like being able to fly over yourself in an airplane while you are on the road to get a birds eye view of the surrounding countryside and any worthwhile detours. To me, this is much better than a GPS.  Plus I can just switch to Google Maps at any time if I just need to find a gas station or coffee shop.

Yeah, we were using her Android phone for nav yesterday, and I told Dorcia, " If I was running a GPS business, I'd be quaking in my boots.."  She said, "Toyota wants 150 dollars to update their built in GPS in the car?? What are they thinking? I might give 20 or 30 bux just so I wouldn't have to turn my phone on."
I have an app for my phone that does aircraft navigation, situational awareness, gas prices at airports, weather, on and on. Amazing stuff.. I should be burnt for a witch.

Haven't used my Garmin for about 3 years. Just have a charger and handlebar clip for the phone.
Good judgement comes from experience.
And experience. That comes from poor judgement.
