which sump guys??
« on: February 05, 2016, 12:28:03 AM »
Im rebuilding my V7 sport after my chrome bore fiasco and would like to convert it to an oil filter in sump to try and retain originality however after a lot of shopping am unable to come up with an early sump pan with filter insitu so maybe Ill have to bite the bullet and purchase one of the deeper sumps with the filter recessed into the pan as I don't want to have an external filter protruding forward or aft, Is there more than one type and what does the majority think is my best way to proceed. thanks for all replies Bill

Pardon me if I've missed the fact that you've already accounted for this, but your V7 Sport was an unfiltered engine as produced a the factory. Converting to a filtered configuration involves considerably more than swapping in a new pan. There are holes to bore in the block, some to plug and other fine points that I don't any longer recall. I'm sure that there's a thread you can dig up that explains the process -- equally likely is that someone with a better memory than mine will point out the reference.

In any event, you'll want to source a sump pan from a later big block engine with the filter in the sump. It will also be possible to use any of a number of aftermarket sump extenders with a filter provision built in (Harper's Outsider, for example). However, there's a good deal of engine internal modifications required before you can just bolt on a sump with a filter.

EDIT
Once again, excuse me if you've already covered this in your plans, but here's a related article from the always useful Greg Bender thisoldtractor.com site:

Le Roy just beat me while typing but !!

Is a bit more ag than just bolting (any) sump on
search here--- was recent excellent post with pics of gallery mods, cases need drilling, plugging, different front main.

Getting filter sump is the easy bit, someone on here will have one or ebay US
Or one of Aus Guzzi people- Thunderbikes, Eurobrit etc

Tempting to say don't bother, the only time it was essential has just passed, nikasil barrels, regular oil changes & I see no problem with no filter.
Plenty of high mileage no filter models still going strong after 40 years, & is original (sump screws give away the mod)

But if you do it, follow the guide, do it right.

Changing crankcase quickest way but you'd lose numbers , not sure which is more unoriginal in your opinion

yes Im aware of whats involved and don't find it too daunting and believe it to be a good modification and with my engine down it seems an appropriate time to do the modification. thanks guys

Out of curiosity why do you what to convert it to run an oil filter? Their is no evidence that an oil filter will extend the life of the motor. Its a lot of work for no return.

If you are interested I do have an oil filter oil pan if you still what to pursue your dream.

You've already done the damage by not listening to sound advice and running the bike on chrome bores.  Just do the tear-down, slap some Gilardonis on it and ride.  Change the oil frequently, no need to over compensate now.

if you cleaned out the sludge trap in the crankshaft you will want a proper oil filter.
i cant see the point of rebuilding a engine , and keep running is without a oil filter, unless you are planning the bike as  a show piece in your living room.
youmight check the oil pump, those are usually worn too.

a 850 T3 sump will fit with modifications on the cases,
if you dont want to modify the cases escher sells a sump extender ring with a external oil filter that just bolts in place.
if you want to restore to original , just remove the ring.
i cant find it on their site right now. not sure it is still available.

Funny, my V7 Sport does just fine without a filter.  Same for my Ambo, and two previous Eldos.

Just don't run them with chrome bores!

I'd have no issue totally rebuilding a non-oil filter motor and continute running it as a non-oil filtered motor. As Cam pointed out chrome bores are this engines enemy not the lack of an oil filter.

Dump the chrome - add a couple of magnets and good oil.

I too built my Eldo motor without a filter.  I did, however, mill off the fins on a 2x3 section of the sump and glue on a transmission magnet.  On the first few oil changes, the magnet picked up quite a bit of (ferrous) dust and a few larger pieces of iron.  I'd definitely do the magnet again.
