V7II vibration
« on: February 11, 2016, 05:34:55 AM »
The V7II has az slight vibration period between 3000 & 3500 revs. It is not troublesome. Recently I have been experiencing larger vibration at these revs. I put in new spark plugs which seemed to reduce the vibration a little, bu,the vibration magnitude seems to be worse as the motor heats up. Any suggestions you fellow gurus. (Not suggesting I am one.)

A few of us with the 1TB motor have noticed a little vibration in that range.

For the most part that motor is generally fine there (unless the load is ridiculous).

I would say overall the vibration near that range decreased a decent bit after a few thousand miles.

But if it increases I would look for reasons like you are doing.

Could be lugging, could be ignition related, could be something loosened up (maybe check for intake leaks).

Of course if it's only slight it might be nothing more than break-in/load/your head etc.

Mine has a more noticeable vibration in that range--then becomes amazingly smooth by 4,000.

Never thought much about it....as, come to think of it, I never wanted a perfectly smooth engine. (boring....).

Agreed.  In 5000 miles mine has gotten a bit smoother.  The motor tells me that it's not really in it's spot until 4K on the indicator so I listen to it.

60mph is the minimum value for 5th gear on my 5 speed.  4th until then to keep the motor where it likes to be.

My V7 11 has a real sweet spot above 4,000 and I don't give it full throttle below that to avoid the very slight vibration it would bring, but since max torque is somewhere around 3,000 it should not hurt it. Steve.

The 1TB and 2TB motors have a surprisingly different feel to them, the 1TB being "happier" at about 500 rpm lower in the general range than the 2Tb (at least both Jay and I observed that riding ours back-to-back).

I get an annoying vibration through the right foot peg on my 2014 V7 Special.

Still don't have a lot of miles on it, so hoping it will smooth out over time.

Otherwise, it's really a nice ride.  The mirrors don't vibrate too much, and I don't feel many vibes through the bars or seat.

I know they are not the same, but my Norge really does not like 3,000 RPM. It dislikes 3,500 RPM less, but it is still not happy. Once it hits 4,000 RPM and beyond, it is in heaven. Butter smooth and purring with content!

I suggest you rev your motor a little more. Perhaps you are lugging it at 3,000 RPM.

My V7 is happy at lower revs than my V11 Jackal, which was happy at lower revs than my 2V Breva 1100, which I believe was happier at lower revs than the 8V 1200 motors....

He MIGHT be lugging it if load is really high.... But it's a pretty different thing than an 8V Norge....

my 2015 with 800 miles is a typical Guzzi. first 3 gears it really doesn't care where it's at. 4 & 5th need 4000 or above to not lug. vibration in the pegs starts at 6000 but seems to end at 6500. it is just telling you it's time to shift.
have you checked all muffler clamps / bolts from the headers back.

The Norge should be smooth and pleasant from 2500 up. It should easily run 3k and vibe barely enough to let you know it's running.

Maybe check all the motor mounts and such?

With the last map I loaded it is clean and I can easily run it at 3000 and barely feel it running.  The 8V is a 2500 - 8000 rpm motor. If you have snatchiness or vibes that make the motor seem unhappy anywhere in that range something ain't right.

I am not saying to run at 2500 rpms, I am saying that it should be smooth there too.

Maybe I have a high vibration threshold, or maybe I just expect motorcycles not to have as smooth a ride as cars.  I didn't experience anything like excessive vibration during 12,000 miles on my '13 V7 Stone, nor during 6000+ miles so far on my '16 V7II Stone.  Both vibrate(d) about as much as I would expect a motorcycle to vibrate, and no more.

Yes.

One of the great things about the Norge is being able to run it in 3rd or 4th and run it down to 2500-3000 and then up to 6-7 for a wide speed range without bothering with changing tranny speeds

As for vibration, we all have different thresholds not just for vibes but for what we expect from different engines. If my Trophy 1200 or ST1100 vibes like a Guzzi I'd think it was ready to fall apart. You expect them to be silky smooth. We expect the Guzzi to vibe in a certain way as long as things aren't falling off and the mirrors are crystal clear (at least on the Norge) at all speeds.

On the Norge, the handlebars are rubber mounted and the footrests are design end to isolate from vibes too. If you are feeling more than pleasant vibes in the handlebars even at 2500 something is amiss.

In general, check the easy things pronto, oil and fluids, motor mounts, contact points between motor and exhaust, loose fasteners, etc. No joy? Check engine tune even if you think it's good.

Take side and tail bags off. Check the tires (yes, they can cause vibration) check the suspension. Loose cables where they should be secured? Easy fix.

Get out in a really smooth road. Checking for vibes on a pot holed road or one worn to ragged rocks is worthless.

Added accessories? Some look good but don't fit properly. Tools under the seat? Wrap them up and around the bundle some neoprene, keeps them from banging around.

Isolate where you feel it, handlebars, foitrests , seat or tank? Track it down and work back to the engine because that might show you where is starts.

When vibes change from what you know, something needs attention. No engine simply smooths up like a switch at a certain miles ridden. You might hear things like " at 10,000 miles it suddenly got smooth". Can't buy that and it doesn't make sense. It might get smoother after a certain mikes of operation but is isn't rough one day and smooth the next unless there was something wring before. Over a few days of running, OK but not like sitting at a stop light and it gets smooth all of a sudden.

Cables are sometimes the worst offender.

Also, just because you feel vibes up front doesn't mean that is the source of the vibes. Sometimes the vibes come from the other end or other side of the bike.

Put you hand on the cyl heads and case. If they aren't shaking but you have bad vibes elsewhere, hunt around.

It is a v twin.

BTW, car engines aren't always that smooth either hut are often sat in big rubber engine mounts. The transverse mounted V engines often have something lime a dig bone to keep them from rocking too much and they are rubber mounted too. That car engine could be shaking around but sitting inside you'd never know.

The problem previously described was that the vibration, between 3000 & 3500 revs, had increased markedly over the normal vibration of a V7II.

I re-did the tappet clearances and lo and behold, the left inlet setting was too tight (don't ask me why because I have no idea. Perhaps a little confusion between imperial and metric.) and it was the only one like this.

I corrected this and checked or slightly adjusted the other three tappets.

The vibration is now back to normal.

I was having trouble lining up the gasket and putting on the oil pipe on the tappet cover but I resolved this by using two dowels, (5mm rod approximately 70mm or 2&3/4" length) in diagonally opposite holes in the head.

After re-fitting the oil pipe the tappet cover is placed over these dowels.

Two of the large head screws can be inserted and done up loosely and similarly the two normal head screws.

The dowels are then removed and the last two screws are inserted and screwed up.

All screws then tensioned up to 75 Inch lbs (or nice and snug).

Cheers

That's it!  You mistakenly used an SAE screwdriver instead of a metric one.  I'm embarrassed to admit I've made the same mistake myself.

Thanks John, that sounds like the way to go.

Those oil hose connections sure are a bugger to get back.

Maybe I'm getting older because I don't recall having so much trouble last time or perhaps we blot out the more unpleasant.

Thanks everyone for their input.
