Breva 750 missing dipstick

Hi,

Has anyone on here ever had the screw on dipstick rattle itself loose and ultimately fall off? I'm asking because I'm now currently stuck at work scouring the internet looking for a replacement for my 750 Breva whilst my bikes slowly clicking its cool.in a puddle of its own blood outside 

I'm certain I didn't forget to tighten it up last time I checked the oil (about two weeks or three tankfuls ago) so I'm worried that someone tampered with it last night outside my house.

It's a known problem with the odd Breva - the dipstick winds itself off while under way. There are various fixes to stop that - search here & on the MG_750 Yahoo site - oddly, it doesn't appear to happen with the V7 or Nevada although the engine is the same. As Malik said, a known problem.

As a result of mine disappearing in to the ether I carry a pair of pipe tongs to make sure mine really is tight. I believe a guy who used to be here drilled a small hole that went through the dipstick and the protrusion it resides in and locked it with an R clip.

It happens with the V7 too - happened to Jay on his V7R within the first few months.

And I thought I read about other V7 owners too who have had it happen.

My working theory is that clumsy O-ring either gets too worn or falls out of position.

I drilled the cap and wire it into place.  Here's a pic, and a pic of the other rider who pinned it into place.

My V7R has a dipstick from a Honda CB175 in it, it is the right length and everything.
When the original was liberated, I knew it might take some time to source a replacement, so, I looked around my shop to see what I had that might fit as a stop gap.   I ended up just source another CB175 stick form eBay to replace the one that I borrowed.  It arrived much faster than a Guzzi part would.   The shape of it makes it easier to get tight too.

Honda seems to have used the same size hole and thread for the dipsticks of most of their late 60's / early 70's bikes, so, a dip stick for one of thees from eBay might be a quick way to get a replacement.   If you've got an old Honda, or a friend with one, you might be able to borrow one in the meantime.

As a "get me home" emergency measure, you might be able to find a "temporary freeze plug" or "expansion plug" to put in the hole. I had to do that once when my Morini 500 blew it's dipstick out on a ride.



Should be available at most auto parts stores.

Also, oddly enough, the V1000 I-Convert atf tank cap/dipstick appears to be very similar if not the same.

You might also be able to buy a "test plug" from the plumbing dept. of Home Depot, Lowes, or other hardware/home store.

Had mine come out and disappear on the road once.I did exactly what sign216 did and it's worked fine for years.
