Grabby Clutch 07 Vintage
« on: February 26, 2016, 09:52:26 AM »
I have noticed on my bike at a stop I get a grabby clutch or a feeling like the engine wants to stall.  Even revving a little when engaging does not seem to help.  While riding around it shifts smooth and feels great.  Is there anything to worry about, warped discs, glazing on flywheel?  Bike has 21k on it and quite possibly had a trailer on it for some of the miles.  Could this end in a whole clutch fail or just get worse over time and not grenade inside the bell housing?

What would you recommend checking out without crabbing frame, and what should I replace while I am in there?

Thanks

Try adjusting the cable

Generally when the clutch hub starts the wear it will do that. I go to this part because you say it may have had a trailer on it. The power transfer from the clutch to the trans goes thru the hub and creates a couple of grooves in the teeth on the hub. Generally it causes the bike to not want to disengage and it is very hard to find neutral and a stand still. Once the clutch will let loose and idle, then the bike wants to lurch forward when the clutch is being re-engaged as the plates slam back together dropping into those grooves. If this is the case, a tear down is in your future. A slight blip of the throttle while you are still rolling will sometime help with the disengagement.

I don't have a issue with finding neutral and it shifts real well while moving.  I may have a tear down like you said though. I have a decent amount of slack now in the lever.  Thanks for input Curtis.

I have a decent amount of slack now in the lever.

Excess slack could make the clutch stay partially engaged when you come to a stop, make the engine try to stall, etc..  As suggested above by fotoguzzi, adjust the cable correctly before doing more difficult things to fix it.
