SP 1000 ignition switch

I need to pull the ign switch on a '79 SP1000. Looks like the whole instrument panel needs to get lifted out to get at it. Not covered in the manual.
-does the fairing windshield need to come off first?
- I think there's a nut on either side of the panel. Is there anything to unscrew underneath?
-I'd appreciate any advice before diving in. Thanks, David

David,
The fairing is easy to pull off...  there are two 8MM bolts that secure two mounts attached to the upper triple tree that require a universal joint, 6" extension and a ratchet to remove, at least that is how I do them.  You can probably use a 12MM (could be a 13MM ) ratcheting box wrench to pull them.
Next, a single straight slot, broad head screw at the bottom of the fairing. 

When you pull those three off, hang on to the fairing, pull it forward and reach in and unplug the directional wires...  set the fairing aside.

The ignition cylinder can be accessed by pulling the rubber cover up on the dash, it is held in place by a couple of tabs under the dash, that is all I can think of to call them, they capture a metal tab under the dash that is part of the gauge panel.

From there you should be able to unscrew the ignition cylinder securing ring and pop the switch out through the bottom of that panel.

If it does not push all the way through, there are only two bolts holding the panel, pull those two and tip it back and then you will have full access to pull the switch. 

Make a diagram of the wire layout before you pull them off.

How are you so sure that the switch is bad...?

Thanks Rob. My bike has some very weird start/run issues which I posted on the forum a while back. Several replies suggested checking the ignition switch as a start, then tracing downstream from there. I've been deeply buried in a Jag resto project, but the weather is starting to turn & the Guzzi needs attention! Best wishes, David

Before completely disassembling, try to reach the bottom of the ignition switch if possible with some long needle nose pliers. The white wire is the one that powers the ignition. It may be loose, try to push it back up in the switch.
