Motorcycle USA kaput
« on: March 01, 2016, 03:56:08 PM »

So-  I just saw the news that Moto USA is going dark. I enjoyed their reviews. No- they were not as in depth as MCN, but they tended to be on the mark. Adam Waheed is an engaging and passionate writer. Never a good thing to see another publication go under.

Yes - very sad. There are fewer and fewer of them.

Was this one a paper publication? Are they keeping anything going online?

No- they are shutting down the online web content.  Predictably- they were finding a hard time supporting the website when it's all free content.

Quite frankly, I couldn't figure out how they could afford to do what all they were doing.   I'm a regular customer of their store, but I found out a few years ago that wasn't a retail outlet, it was set up like Amazon.

I suspect that this is just part of the consolidation that is happening with US motorcycle aftermarket retailers.

In 2012, MAG Retail Group (MAG stands for motorcycle aftermarket group) was created as the owner of Motorcycle Superstore and J&P Cycles.

Now we are seeing the merger (probably also retaining distinct brand names) of Cycle Gear and RevZilla.

I suspect that MAG, which as I understand owns Motorcycle USA, has decided that there are more effective ways to market its products.

Why would that be?

Because RevZilla's in-house content, delivered on its own site and on its extremely popular Facebook and YouTube channels, is killing it. Its model is the future of retailer promotion. MAG knows that. Motorcycle USA is a dead end, now put out of its misery.

If I wanted to sell motorcycle gear via social media, the two guys who do the RevZilla videos (Lemmy and co-founder Anthony Bucci) would be at the top of my list. Adam Waheed wouldn't even be on the radar.

RevZilla's secret, in part, is that it has figured out how to come across as more credible than any of the motorcycle "journalists".

Funny you should say that, I've purchased a fair amount through RevZilla due to their reviews, the customer reviews, the great prices and quick delivery.

I've wondered if they have a special deal with Roland Sands due to some of their specials......

I used to be employed at Motorcycle Superstore in Medford Oregon as a product specialist for a while.  They had a warehouse and a retail store but most of the business was on-line.  When Don (the owner) sold to J&P Cycle I suspect there was no need for the digital magazine (Motorcycle USA) anymore.  It existed to generate traffic to the sales website.  Plus Don is a true afficianado and probably didn't mind paying a bit to have the latest and greatest bikes on hand!  A genuine nice guy that did well and cashed out.  :thumb:

Well, that is depressing. I really enjoyed Moto USA's content and am especially sad that their online content will also be taken down. Twenty years of work erased over night? I'll have to start downloading some stuff, especially on the V7.
