Stelvio Question: Are all MG's 50-state legal?
« on: April 16, 2016, 08:23:50 PM »
I am in CA, looking to buy a 2-3 year old Stelvio. I prefer a factory roller version, or one that has had the conversion done already.

I will have a better chance if I buy from out of state, question is, are all MG's imported into the U.S. 50 state legal?

CA does not require smog checks for motorcycles, but they might give me a problem if I bring in a newer (<7500 miles) bike from out of state.

Or has someone done this recently that can clarify for me? Do new MG's have a emissions sticker somewhere on them?

Thanks for any help in advance....

Jesse

Since the `90s all new Guzzis sold in the US have been 50 state legal.  As far as the sticker being on X bike now, it should be unless someone took it off.  Many also remove the charcoal filter required in Calif., so that's another issue that might come up when you register it in Calif.

It's been my experience, having lived in Calif. for decades on & off, if you go to a DMV outside of a metropolis, you will find the title transfer much easier and not as anal.

In addition to Wayne's good info (yes, all Guzzis have been 50-state for some time), you can usually take a look at the PDF for the parts manual to identify where on the bike the emissions compliance sticker should be. The one online at AF1 shows the sticker and its part number, but not its placement (which is unusual).

From my experience with an LA area DMV, the emissions sticker was their main concern. The guy that looked it over was pretty taken with the Mighty Scura.

The emissions compliance stickers on the Hydros are on the top rear of the tank, just under the "nose" of the seat.  Don't have one?  Borrow a tank but make sure it's from the same model year.

Dumb place for the sticker, IMHO.  The frame, under the seat, is more common on other makes and is more sensible as frames are not quite as interchangeable as fuel tanks!
