I'm with ya'll, he did it his way and didn't imitate anybody.  A special artist.

But all this talk about squeaky clean..... they are now saying it might have been drugs.  That apparently was the cause of the emergency landing of his plane a few days ago.

If that played a role it would be similar to Bob Marley, who as a Rastafarian refused an amputation of his big toe when stricken with melanoma that would have saved his life.

My father was a Christian Scientist and they didn't believe in getting medical help when needed.  I believe they changed their name to Scientology.

Well, the stay in a hospital after the plane landed was described as being for flu - and no source I can find has mentioned drugs. He canceled a concert due to illness prior to the emergency landing as well. When a musician dies unexpectedly, there's always somebody 'now saying it might have been drugs'. They said that about Mama Cass - but it was a sandwich (actually, even that wasn't true - it was a heart attack).

Heck, even now they aren't sure it was a heroin overdose that killed Jim Morrison - and he was a known user!

Despite the names, they actually have no relationship. Christian Science was a 'back to primitive Christianity' movement ties to a combination of the King James Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy in the later half of the 1800s.

Scientology was created by L Ron Hubbard, a writer from the golden age of science fiction. There's a famous story that another writer confirmed to me as true - that L Ron came up with the movement after a night-long bull session that included Robert Heinlein. Heinlein reportedly said that the way to true power was to create your own religion - and L Ron Hubbard adopted the motto and executed on it. (Variations of this legend exist, but I heard this version from someone who was reportedly there.)

While Scientologists are aggressively antagonistic towards phychiatry and related sciences, they generally are not against traditional physical medicine.

While it's certainly possible that drugs were involved, neither the Daily Mail nor TMZ are reputable sources, particularly when neither can get even one attributable quote. I'll withhold further judgement till the autopsy is released.

A real pity...just a month ago it was Vanity, one of his ex-girlfriends, and now Prince himself...the dude was creative beyond belief...Purple Rain came out at a special time indeed...

TMZ first reported the death, they got that right.

What's wrong with the Daily Mail?  They seem to tell the truth about "us" that "our" corporate MSM never tells us.

Put another way, what do you consider a "reputable source"?   Who was it that reported it was the "flu"?

We are lied to all the time.  What was that quote about believing nothing you hear and half of what you see?

Autopsies / medical examiners lie too.

The fact is we likely will never know the truth and that changes nothing on the sadness of his passing.

what do you consider a "reputable source"?

The coroner, who will be doing an autopsy sometime Friday.

Yeah I agree it's absolutely tragic, he did a lot for the music world. On the same topic, David Marshall died today as well in Australia, he worked tirelessly to raise money for cancer victims, and went about his work without fanfare, I don't think he lived in a multi million dollar mansion, he had to slum it in a '70's brick veneer, just thought I'd let you all know 'cos I don't think it made the news.

A large portion of popular music artists as they get older trade in their creative restlessness for just clocking in with new music that is either built on the same formula as their hits, hence the whole "I like their early stuff" cliche; yet, I dunno if Prince ever stopped pushing himself.  The drummer in his band is a girl from Louisville, actually.  When they played here I didn't catch the show but reportedly Prince gave her a big solo and sendup.

Did Minneapolis have hundreds of purple filters for their spotlights at the ready? I'm always surprised when local governments can't plow the roads after a snowstorm, but can immediately do something like this.

If doctors administered a "save shot" and he didn't heed the advice to stay around for 24 hrs. then he shows up the next night at a gathering, etc. etc..  then falls victim to something that takes him down...
The final prognosis may say some kind of bug (pneumonia, flu, even organ failure, etc.), but the damage was done by the drugs.  Maybe the drugs he took from the Walmart visits interacted as well or were the ultimate cause, depending if they were abused.  My guess is ultimately drugs took him down.  If he had just layed low and stayed in the hospital he probably would still be here.  Egos and image sometimes make for bad choices.  Sad.
