Eldorado tach
« on: April 24, 2016, 10:55:16 AM »
Hi there, I am new here and just got my 73 Eldo back on the road. It had been sitting for 20 years and now has a big bore kit and fresh valve job. Running like a top! One mystery to be is the tach. When changing revs it can swing pretty wildly, giving more of a suggestion rather than indication of engine speed. Is this normal?

mine worked perfectly when I bought the bike, then started to swing all over the place, perhaps as you have stated, then started working in reverse at times...

I unplugged it and it hasnt bothered me since... but watching this thread with interest

You're lucky it works at all. Mine is erratic: either it doesn't work at all, or it is all over the map - a bit like the speedo!

I have gone through two used ones, then I bought a reproduction Veglia tach from Spain, problem is its calibrated to indicate twice the rpm!!

The original tach has a cast weight sandwiched between plastic, the casting swells, splits the plastic and then the erratic readings begin. Eventually the tach shorts out and this will short the ignition.

I think Speedhut sells good modern replacements.

Mine is not working but who needs a tack on an Eldorado anyway.
If I could find new chrome rims I might be tempted to open it up but it looks good at the moment.
