v7 breather hoses
« on: May 23, 2016, 04:58:44 PM »
If I want to reroute the breather hoses that come off the heads to the airbox and route the two hoses to a T and to the rear of the bike; by passing the airbox, can I take the hose and fitting off of the sump?
I'm referring to the hoses that carry the separated oil back to the sump.
It looks like the fitting at the sump will unscrew
I'm hoping this will keep the oil out of the airbox.

Yes you can remove, but it's below the oil surface and will need plugging

Get a crush washer and a suitable bolt (m6?)

You don't have to use a t or y to link the rocker box hoses, you can run them seperatly to the rear

Plug and holes left in the air box

I did similar.

After I had a white puff of smoke blow out the left exhaust awhile back, I started losing oil through the air box overflow hose mostly after spirited RPM runs. All initial topical inspections found nothing. I expected to remove the left cylinder to see what was wrong. Until I could get around to this, I rerouted the valve cover hoses and air box overflow, to the rear of the swing arm to avoid throwing oil at my rear wheel and brake.

In doing so, I eliminated the problem altogether. Don't ask me why. And I've really tested it, high RPM for miles.

Small blocks throw a lot of oil out the breathers. On the racer I did last year, I removed the air box and replaced it with a K&N I bought a recovery bottle on Ebay, and vented to that but, retained the return hose.

I don't have detailed pics but, I ran the lines from the heads to a fitting at the top of the tank. I ran a line from the bottom to the pan. there was another fitting on the bottle high up so, I attached a loop of clear line under the seat as a vent to atmosphere. My theory is the vapor will accumulate in the bottle and find it's way back into the crankcase. It's worked fine so far.

I rerouted the breather hoses today
Ran the hoses from the heads to a 3/8" T then a 3/8 hose along the rear fender terminating at the plate.
Removed the hoses from the airbox to the sump and plugged the hole with an 8mm bolt.
A very quick20 mile run indicates it works fine with no oil yet in the vent line and no oil in the airbox anymore

Thanks for the update, great fix. I may consider this, eliminating the air box transition altogether, it makes sense.

120 miles today
90 degrees F
"Evidence" of oil in the line going out the back.
Maybe a small fraction of an ounce.
It seems to be working fine

Is this modification for a V7 II only?  Or will it work on the early V7's?

My bike is a2013 single throttle body.
It has 4 hose connections to the airbox.
2 from the heads and 2 going to the sump.
3 of the airbox connections are 3/8" and one is closer to 1/4"
I capped them with vacuum caps from NAPA
The sump hose has a 8mm fitting that I plugged with an8mm bolt and a crush washer
