Happy Donut Day!
« on: June 03, 2016, 03:56:00 AM »
I'm not of the persuasion myself, but it's a big deal for some.

Back when I was a kid I had to get up at 5AM and ride my bike 5 miles each way to serve early mass.  It was always dark.  I passed a donut shop that baked for a lot of restaurants and also had a counter.  On Tuesdays they'd do the big glazed ones and maple bars.  On Thursdays it was the filled ones.  I'd get the Tuesday ones before they put anything on them and really liked Bismarks.  I could get three for a quarter, which was about all I could afford.
Then they paved the first mile out toward the church and put in a stop light.  I was coming home from early mass with a bag of donuts, walking my bike across the street with the new stop light.  A green F100 ran me and the bike over, dragged the bike, and kept going.  For some reason other cars kept driving around me.  I couldn't get out of the road -- both my legs were broken -- so I waved the donut bag trying to get someone's attention.  A guy finally stopped and put me in his car and took me to the hospital.  He ate my damaged donuts along the way commenting that I was lucky I didn't have the pudding squished out of me like the bismarks.  I rode bikes again, but I quit being an alter boy (in more ways than one) and haven't bought any bismarks since.

Quite a story, and food for thought while enjoying a doughnut today -- which I think I'll go get.

Is this the root of your moniker, RK?

I had no idea there was a doughnut day. Good grief, I guess there is a day for just about everything now a days.

As for your situation, that sucks. Did you ever figure out who was driving the truck............. and beat him?

Anyone who witnessed that and didn't stop to help - I don't have the right words.         :boxing:   :copcar:

Very sorry you went through that.

Regarding the donuts - fresh warm Krispy Kreme's are good and Dunkin Donuts can make a good one too.  Asheville has some specialty donut shops (of course).  Vortex is drooled over by some but doesn't float my boat.  Hole donuts is next to try.

It's worth a moment to recall the origin of the holiday, which began in the 1930s to remember and honor the "Donut Dollies" that provided baked goods to the troops in WWI.

Salute!
Then again, when I was watching Predator I didn't think two members of its cast would become governors, either. So you never know.

I was 9 or 10.  I remember very well that it was a first generation dark green F100 with stake bed sides.  I can still see it in my head.  I also remember very well that nobody asked me anything about it -- not about the vehicle that hit me, if I was in the shiny new crosswalk, or if I was walking or riding the bike with or against the shiny new stoplight with the little 'walk/don't walk" signals with the buttons or anything.  My dad was just pissed that the incident interrupted his morning and that I wouldn't be any good on the farm for a while.  Beyond that he didn't really have any interest.  So no, the guy got away.

Watch out for the sloppy dunkers!

I noticed that in big companies, whenever a department meeting is held, the early birds always get all the best donuts first.

You come in fifteen minutes before the meeting starts and you'll see 3 empty boxes of crumbs and one box with 2 rainbow sprinkle donuts, one of which has had a bite taken out of it. Shameful!

They had three big boxes of donuts at the body shop where my fairing and tank are getting finished.  In the employee area.  All sorts.  Probably 3 dozen.  The shop has three people on staff.  They are big into the celebration -- they reminded me that today is the big day -- but what can they possibly do with that many donuts?
