buggy helmet..

All,

Rode my V7R early yesterday morning and ran into a swarm of bugs.  No big deal, but one plugged the Shoei X-12 upper air intake, and trying to remove it all I did was drive the goo deeper, and the hole sealed.  So.....I removed the helmet cheek pieces and liner.  Got the hole cleared and when examining the inside of the helmet:  bug debris and junk all over.  Liner foam was falling apart too.  Filthy.  Cleaned it all and threw out disintegrating foam pieces at very top.  Looked at manufacture date:  10/09, so the helmet is nearly 7 years old?  Decided to shop and ordered a new Shoei RF 1200, same size, same white.  Pondered the GT Air, but opted for the more compact RF, and I don't need the flip down dark visor as I always wear riding prescription sunglasses.  Found some X-12s at deep discounts, but I wonder if they have been sitting in a hot warehouse for years?  Shoei seems to fit my head, and quality is superb. 

Man, I should have cleaned this helmet before now.  Never took it apart until yesterday.  Also washed my jacket per Ms. LD and her prompts about stinking.  Just call me stinky?  Poodles love it though.

They usually have the production date on the label in the helmet if you are still curious.  I usually wear out the foam pieces from too much cleaning.  I hate stinky helmets :)

With my recent switch back to open-face helmets all I have to do is remember to brush my teeth!

Go to MPH and buy a headskin. Lots of us wear them to keep our head cooler and to absorb the sweat. You can easily make a helmet last for a few hundred thousand miles and never clean the inside.

Put a dryer sheet in to help with the funk or shampoo your head. :smile:

Started using a headskin.  I find it more comfy and the helmet seems to fit better.  Helmet feels funny without the headskin, now.

Anything that you use as a helmet liner will work better than not having one.

Head-skin noted.  Rev-zilla is fast!  New helmet showed up.  Fit is excellent:  bit tighter in cheeks than X-12, but it is brand new and will form to my face pretty quickly.  Bit lighter and I bet a bit quieter.  Will try it out tomorrow.  Will keep X-12 for backup.  Had a nice helmet stolen while in high school, so I keep an eye on them.

Don't know how you guys do it, but, when I wear a head skin the helmet will still get funky over time.  Just takes a little longer.  When commuting I would have three or four of them so I could clean them after every day of riding.  The helmet would still get smelly after a few weeks.
