Old vs New (NGC)

I have always lusted over a 1968 Shelby GT500 KR since I passed on the chance to buy one some 35 years ago for $8000.00

Today they are commanding $150 ~ $200K. This convertible looks very, very nice

As a comparison the 68 GT500KR with a 428 big block rated at 335 hp, ran 0 ~ 60 in 6.5 seconds and was claimed to reach 140 mph.

A current production BMW M4 which retails for $67K runs 0 ~ 60 in 4.1 seconds and churns out 425 hp from a 3 litre turbo in line 6.

Not that I have the money to blow on a 60's super car, but even if I did it would be hard to justify that kind of coin when a for a third or less the price a modern screamer that will, by every matrix kill the GT 500KR, except for the cool factor.

Got me asking why I have a gaggle of 70's Guzzi's that could be replaced by modern speed and performance??

For some reason I just don't apply the same logic to motorcycle ownership. Are bikes to be judged any differently than cars?

Wow, congratulations to FORD, I had no idea that they were resurrecting the GT let alone that they have once again won at the 24 hours of LeMans.

Afraid to ask what the price is for the new FORD GT but a V6 that outs out 600 hp is pretty amazing.

I'd vote for newer.  But, the only Mustang I liked was the original Shelby GT.  The ones with big blocks were only good for drag racing.  Never liked any of the other pony cars.  Gas guzzlers.

My first car, bought it in 76', spent all the money I made working part time over two years to do a ground up restoration, 289 4bl, 4 spd, locker rear end, factory air, red on red, looked just like this and though I loved it  the car was a pig, manual steering, manual drum brakes, terrible handling, noisy and not too good on gas either. Usual storey, married, mortgage and kids and the car went to pay the bills.

I really love my '65 Austin Healey BJ 8, racing green with a tan top, just like new condition....sweet.

I bought a new one in 63. Couldn't kill it, and it screamed "MACHINE" at plus a hundred or so. Everything was shaking. Yeah, sweet.  Black, red interior..

Not really, the modern superbike is so much a superior thing to your/our old Guzzi's its not funny. Doesn't mean that I don't enjoy riding my V11 but the modern bike is a million times better in every way. Suspension that actually works, massively better tires, anti skid and brakes that are in another world to a 70's bike of any kind. The list goes on.
Dont try and compare bikes from across time, appreciate them for what they were in their time and don't let some sentimental rose coloured vision of the past prevent you from sampling the truly brilliant modern bike.

I had several muscle cars over the years. Mostly Mercury Cougars from the late 60's early 70's. Also Mustangs and a 68 Torino GT Fastback. Loved them all and miss them.

None could hold a candle to my 03 WRX, which I also really liked, but it was different.

Whatever you decide, it needs to fire passion in you. If it moves you, get what you desire.

If I was thinking new right now, and mostly a toy with 4 wheels, I believe I would be looking seriously at the Mazda MX5 (Miata)

Why, when I could have bought a new car, with a warranty, great fuel efficiency and that is faster in every way, for the same or less money? 'Cause I've always wanted one, and despite its frustrating old car quirks, it makes me happy. Simple as that.

I have thought about a new car just for me.  Lotus Seven.  If I could afford one I'd buy it today.  Maybe in a couple of years, and, yes, a Caterham would be a good substitute :)

I could also be talked into a Morgan 4/4 or +8, but, it would have to have had all the electrics brought up to speed.  Again, out of my price range.

A buddy of mine and I had access to his older brothers AH3000.  Being a bartender, the brother worked nights and trusted the car to us.  I believe it was a 61 or 62.  No roll up windows.  3 SU sidedrafts.  No powerhouse, but the in line 6 had a wonderful sound.  I'll always remember those warm summer evenings spent driving the AH thru the twisties around Charleston, WV.
