Appreciate any comments from you BMW people - a friend of mine wants to get into sidecars and sent this. Looks OK to me but not sure what the price should be.

Looks like a nice clean conversion. I like the custom tank badge - "R100/2".

That's a nice rig. It's had a lot of custom work that was done very well. It should handle pretty well. My wife and I owned seven rigs over a 35 year period and three of those rigs were BMW/EML rigs with leading link front ends and automobile tires. If we were looking for another rig, this one would get some serious consideration.

Things to consider , the chassis is designed to handle 40 HP , and a dual plugged 100 CC airhead motor , even with small 32 MM carbs , will make double that . These conversions are often lovely to look at , not so great to ride . This is a beautiful rig , but I would want to check it out completely before spending any money .

Very nicely done conversion with the exception of that horrible mag front wheel (pretty easily corrected). I can reasonably see $15K in that project. If it had the original /2 engine in it would be worth at least that much or more, even with the yellow paint job. /6 or /7 conversions, even nice ones don't usually bring near what an original would. What these conversions do provide is enough power to make the bike really practical and usable. Excellent parts availability too. I'd feel comfortable paying $8K for it. Beyond that it just depends on how badly you want it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Reserve was closer to $15,000 than $5,000.

:1: Right now the reserve has not been met.

With stresses on the front end a mag wheel is better but then again it's a modified rig. Ask your friend how much is he willing to spend/what's his budget?

High bid was $8600 - reserve not met. A note from the seller said it was appraised by a BMW dealer at $18-22,000.

Well, they've got some better data now. It was just appraised by every interested BMW hack owner in the country at $8,600.

That's what reserve "auctions" are generally for, anyhow, so that worked.

The /2 conversion I built for my buddy Leo sold for $12k a few years ago. No sidecar, R75/6 engine, /5 trans. and electrics, drum brakes. I'm surprised this one didn't get bid much higher.

Like those dealers on Antiques Roadshow telling a very excited gentleman that his Civil War era blanket is worth $300K on a bad day , and $500K on a good one , well , they are in the business of selling antiques , not buying them . A completely original /2 in great condition will bring about $15K , on a good day

A period /2 without the mods and a hack sell all the time for around $10k.

Then, the seller should ask the dealer to write him a check. NOBODY in their right mind is going to pay anywhere near that price for that rig.

If a dealer appraises it as being worth $18,000 - $22,000 (let's call it $20,000) retail ....

And the dealer doesn't write him a check ON THE SPOT for $15,000 ... then he's either not really a dealer or SOMEONE is just spouting gratuitous B.S.

Buying low and selling high is what dealers do, how they make their living.

Always. If they take trade-ins. They have to make money and when they sell the same vehicle. They have to make money. Buying and selling at or below cost is a sure way of going out of business.

Yeah, around $15k is the number that I had in mind (but neglected to put in my post) that the dealer should have offered if he really thought the bike was worth what the seller claimed. Anything else is BS.
