jks,

This forum has some amazingly friendly, knowledgeable and talented people.  Ask a question, and you get (mostly) very helpful answers.  I strongly believe in the value and power of "group mind".  This is a result of 40 years in the oil industry dealing with risk.  Seismic crews, and drilling rigs, and production platforms, and helicopters, and explosives and really big vehicles can be risky environments. Then there are foreign cultures, lack of medical emergency care, language barriers, and even political revolutions.

I have seen people injured, senselessly maimed, killed, burned, lose fingers, lose eyes, electrocuted, ran over, get lost in the desert and die, lose their way in blizzards and tracked by polar bears for lunch. Yeah, for real.  Why is that?  Unaware of risks, and in many cases too ego driven to ask questions, or listen to the safety experts or those with more experience.  Sometimes even the older seasoned guys get careless.  They think they are immune and have nothing to learn.  They get lazy and arrogant.  Often they are the casualties.

Watch for risk multipliers.  An example I have upcoming in August:  renting an unfamiliar motorcycle, riding a type of road I encounter infrequently, switch from sea level to very high altitude,  likely heavy traffic, possible highway department chip sealing, and knowing the road can be lethal.  Grew up riding it.  Drive it frequently.  Know every curve. This is my home turf.  Because of that I am aware of over-confidence as a risk.  Some don't get that risk multiplier concept.  I do.  I have seen people die from over confidence and being ego driven.

Internet forums can be excellent group mind venues.  And they can be full of the lazy and arrogant that enjoy passive-agressive, put down games.  The height of idiocy is someone on an internet forum condemning someone on the same forum for asking a question.  So, when that happens I simply walk away from the confrontation games.  And it is a big game:  many enjoy the online conflict, and flaming and reactions.

So, my advice is to keep asking questions.  Ignore the jerks.  We all have much to learn.

Ride well, look down the road and stay focused always.  Motorcycle riding is risky.  Never forget that.

End of lecture.  Be careful who you listen to.  Be discerning. Use common sense. Listen to your inner voice.

Ride your own ride LD.  I'm a returning rider like you when things get intense, I'll back off and reevaluate the situation.  I would suggest that the vast majority of advice offered on this forum is offered in good faith without prejudice.

If I may suggest get out and meet more of us face to face.  I can honestly say that the Guzzisti I have met are extremely kind to us less experienced riders and willing to help with mechanical and riding advice.

Hope to see you at Gilhoolies and the GRIT Rally.

Dave,

Don't worry much-- I am thick skinned, yet when the poodles snarl I pay attention.   The polar bear did not get me.

Looking forward to meeting you.  Could be hot as blazes though.   Cool guys on Guzzis never mind Texas heat though....
