locks on soft bags?

You know anyone with a pocket knife can slice through them faster than you can key a lock.

I've never had a problem with anyone dick-ing with my bikes.

Never when I had my camera in the tank bag at Daytona/Sturgis, when I left the keys on the seat at the IHOP in Waco, when I left the keys in the ignition switch in the French Quarter having oysters at the Acme Oyster Bar.

YMMV

more stuff to carry and more keys

You have been very lucky.    I met a group of Kawi.  Concours riders who all parked their bikes in front of a café in Oregon that had no front windows.  When they came out all their tank bags were gone!       I also know 2 Guzzisti who had their POS helmets stolen the same way.

You can get a steel net thingy to go over your back pack when you fly. Prob not a good idea to leave it on while riding though

I like gun locks. They give them away at the police dept, rubber coated steel, two keys, very versatile. Also work great for locking your helmet to the handlebar (through D-ring and behind clutch housing)

Ehh... My buddy's ex had someone empty her bags just the other week. Would they have cut them? Who knows? End result is... someone stole all her stuff.

Maybe look into the wire netting they sell for backpackers. Will it shut down a determined thief? No. But they will prevent snatch and grabs.

How many people use disc locks? They won't shut down a couple of guys with a trailer, right? So why bother?

I use TSA type luggage locks on mine - I figure anything that'll make someone think twice is a good thing. I figure a lot of this sort of theft is someone opening a bag in full view of onlookers - unlikely to apply the knife in same scenario.
Must be said, however, that in many locales/circumstances the bags go with me.

The little TSA luggage locks have resettable combinations and are small enough to leave on as zipper pulls.

you are talking about canvas bags that can easily be cut with a knife?

One type of person will never think of going through someone's stuff.

Another will happily open a bag and root through it.

Yet another will bust locks, steal bags and cut through items.

Eliminating the second won't eliminate the third... but it still eliminates the second.

I come back to my disc lock analogy... a disc lock will keep someone from pushing the bike away, but it won't stop a few dudes and a van from stealing it. So... why bother with a  disc lock at all, right?

Or... those glass windows in your car can easily be smashed with a spark plug... so why do them  up, or lock the car at all?

Well, since I don't use a disk or wheel lock then I guess that doesn't apply to me either.  No fork lock either.

Along those lines a zip tie would do the same thing on soft bags.

I leave the tank and duffle bag on the bike when I go inside to eat at places.  Never had an issue with it.  One day I know someone will take one or both.  Since I accept that, then I don't put anything really valuable inside them.

FWIW, why would a thief take what is inside the bags and leave the expensive bags behind?

Yes, a determined thief will steal anything they want, locks or no locks.

Because turning out a bag takes seconds.

Unbuckling, detaching bags will take minutes... which one is riskier?

Theft is matter of opportunity, in most cases.

bought these and am very satisfied with them. work well with cbow bags as the locks can be tucked in pouch out of sight so dont jingle around or shout out look these bags are locked. no extra keys to carry around either.

A friend of mine came up with this solution.

He bought a wireless motion detector and receiver from Harbor Freight.  ($16.99)

He taped the electronic eye to have a very narrow beam.
I think it took a little experimenting to get it right.

When he leaves the bike he sets the motion detector on the bike aimed at the luggage.
Then takes the receiver with him.  Either at night in his motel room or eating
or anytime he is away from the bike.  It will beep if someone disturbs the luggage or the bike.

Here is a link to the unit.

I use a small padlock on my Tankbag zipper as well, will have to think about what would be a good solution to actually lock the tank bag to the bike?  A small cable somewhere that doesn't fall off somewhere, although I usually tank my tank bag in with me, as cumbersome as that is...better safe than sorry.
