Good Carbs for 1974 Eldorado 850 Police
« on: July 18, 2016, 10:23:54 PM »
Did not have time to do a big search this evening so please excuse me if this is 205.

I have a stripped slide top screw on one of my carbs and think this would be the perfect time to put something a bit more modern, WITH VACUUM ports on it so I can sync it properly. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good set of carbs that would fit the bike and make it run a bit better and allow me to sync it perfectly?

Here is the beast.

  :copcar:

Thanks in advance.

Vacuum ports are easily drilled and tapped into the manifolds.

First, if that is an original '74 then the intake manifolds should already have drilled bosses to include vacuum balancing.  These vacuum ports are on the manifold, not on the carb itself.  If not, then the  manifolds have been substituted and they can be drilled and tapped.  You should also mill a tiny flat area so that the sealing washer has something to seal against.

Second, if you have stripped a top screw, your carb is still repairable.  The thread is a VERY rare 4mm X 0.75mm.  The hole in the carb is very deep but only threaded in about half an inch.  The remaining hole can also be threaded much deeper.  Once you do this, you will need to use longer cap screws to accommodate the deeper holes.  I just happen to have the proper tap for the holes and also I have fabricated two longer screws.  I can restore your carb body if you send it to me.

Thank you all for the valuable information. The bike is a really who knows what as I have no prior history of it. The manifolds are not drilled for ports however. I will take all your suggestions to heart and think about what I want to do with this. It runs good but sometimes I have to snap the throttle to get it to return to idle so it appears that the slides are a wee bit sticky.  It would probably help to just get it out and ride it.

Thanks again.

get a pair of guzzi amal manifolds, and then get a set of PWK carbs. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Carb-TRIUMPH-NORTON-BSA-Amal-Mikuni-alternative-30mm-carburetor-PWK-JRC-30-900-/201558714099
