Has anyone ever shipped a bike to Italy?
« on: August 19, 2016, 11:40:35 AM »
Wondering about shipping and duties and tax. And any other issues associated.

Doubt I will ever find another 1000S there and hate to sell everything and then regret it later when a decent replacement cannot be found.

So you're moving there and want to take the bike with you?

Here's a good place to start to ask questions...they have an online chat service you can start with to get ideas on the shipping portion of the process.

For the permanent licensing requirements once in Italy, will probably have to find another source - maybe talk with one of the local dealers (Agostini in Mandello or Maffezzini (ask for Ercole) in Senago or others).

In the event you cannot take it over with you right away and need a place to store it, I'd be happy to have it keep company with my Norge in my garage and run it from time to time as needed...plenty of room here.

Are you active on Facebook? If so, contact Nelson Thatcher there, he's a longtime Guzzi guy who moved to Italy less than a year ago, and had his 2 Guzzis shipped over just recently.

Also on WG as Damnyankee .

One question for the OP . Have you contacted the Italian authorities to inquire what is necessary ?

Yes, thanks Dusty, I was just about to mention his WG handle of Damnyankee too.

He has posted quite a few fantastic photos of his new adopted home, and recently, of his Guzzis and some other local bikes as well.

Yes I did.

ohhh boy , you must be very patience , the Italian DMV sucks a**

Shipping it , its easy.
Taxes , the shipper just need to know the "value" and the taxes wil be applied based on that . 23 %

Being a 1000S and old bike , the best route to register it in Italy is to sign it up to the FMI or ASI ( historic motorcycle )
http://www.federmoto.it/specialita/moto-epoca/
http://www.asifed.it/faq/

But

It will take some time , you have to submit pics and wait for them to get back to you etc , the whole process can take up to 6 MONTH

It took a friend of mine almost 1 year to get his shovelhead registered in Italy.

He used this agency :
Nero su Bianco di  Luinetti Luigi Massimiliano, phone :02 9906 5184
they are in Cesate , Milano.

They helped him through the whole process and they picked up the bike and took it to the final inspection at the DMV office.
They charged him 500 euros 3 years ago.

OR

you can go through this guy

http://www.cuttica.com/

they will do everything from A to Z but is gonna be expensive ( they will register it in Germany and then to Italy , give them a call and they will help you )

good luck,

Marco

A moto guzzi dealer "might" be able to help you . Try Agostini or Noseda guzzi , they are well known and connected.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I am not a Facebook person, any other way to contact Nelson? I wrote to Damnyankee and will see what he says. All the rest is good info!

There is more than nine months before the big move, but like to be prepared.

Ted, I sent Nelson a message on Facebook, and let him know about your thread here.
Hopefully he will be able to get back with you soon. He's really loving it there so far.

Depending how long your going to live in Italy.  If only for a few years you can ship to Germany and ride to Italy and just pay the green card insurance and keep your US plates. If you ship to Italy you have to register it there or ship it out in 6 months. I have had a US bike in Milano for 6 years with US plates and never had a problem.

Groundhog,
How does that work and what is "green card" insurance? I am planning on staying, but whatever is easiest to do so I can be riding asap is also best.

Why does one need an agency? Can you not try registering yourself? My girlfriend ( soon to be wife) is native and can help with parts of the language I don't understand.

the green card is nothing but an insurance coverage that cover Italian vehicles all over Europe.
Every insurance company provide that coverage .

Since your fiance speak italian , why do not ask her to call the number i provided ?
U have to use an agency because it is going to be a nightmare if you try yourself. ( you are forgetting that you are moving into a country with the most bureaucratic crap ever .)

The motorcycle must be inspected at the DMV and if the inspector ( which are all pricks ) is having a bad day , hes gonna turn you down , no question.
Using an Agency will avoid you to deal with the inspector , DMV and Agencies are "connected" , they all know each others and you are most likely to get your paperwork easily.

You cannot go through an EU country because you will be an Italian permanent resident , only agency can do those " trick ".
A vehicle that is already registered in an EU country for eg. Germany , will easily pass the Italian inspection.
Italian inspection to a vehicle coming straight from USA it will be a big PITA.
they will check , mufflers, turn signals , lights , horn etc.

ALSO

there is a different between importing a new vehicle and an old "vintage" vehicle.
Vintage vehicle must be registered at the FMI or ASI ( i posted link above on my first post )
If you do not do that , your bike will be registered as a new vehicle and titled as a 2016.
Having a bike registered as vintage will give you a discount on insurance policy.
Also you do not want your old guzzi titled as a 2016 do you ?
I lived in Milan 32 years, I know something about my Country.....

Question :
where are you going to move ? ( if you do not mind me to ask )

here another American based company that you can contact and ask how the process work.
http://www.aemgarage.com/US/costs-import-usa-europe-italy.php

ciao !
buona fortuna , ne avrai bisogno....

Arveno,

Moving to Legnano, close to Milan. I will give her the number and see what she comes up with. There is also a "friend" in the police there. Maybe helpful, we will see.
Not going until next May so lots of time to work on things from here too.

What arveno says. Use an agency.
Trying to deal with the bureaucracy in Southern Europe (Spain) brought my wife to tears.
Nothing will make sense. Nothing will work the way you expect.
Whatever it costs is a bargain.
Here is a short parody that is not too far off when it comes to dealing with funcionarios in Spain:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmiPOYPZ-fA

I'm sure it is almost the same, as arveno describes the possibilities.

Hi Ted , you moving to Legnano ? Nice....!
Cesate is pretty close , Call nero su Bianco , that agency is very professional and reasonable priced.
They will give you the list of things to do and when ready they will take care of inspection.
It should be possible for the first six months to ride your bike as a "tourist " and you should be able to keep the US licence place for that season meanwhile you get all the paperwork done.

BTW , if you need a guzzi shop , MOTORBIKE in Senago is the best in your area.

good luck !!
keep us posted.

The green card insurance I'd purchased for a set length of time.  I store my bike and purchase my green card insurance from Mototouring in Milano.  If you call them they could sell you the insurance or maybe help you navigate the problems with registering in Italy.  You could email Mototouring at info@mototouring.com.  Send the inquiry Mariaelna
