Aeroplane stuff.

Sitting in my brother's back yard this afternoon in Seaford on the Sussex coast we were royally entertained by a constant stream of vintage aircraft flying overhead or nearby from an air show at Eastbourne a few miles down the coast.

Highlight was a fly past by the last remaining Lancaster bomber still flying and two Spitfires from the 'Battle of Britain' flight that passed almost directly overhead at an altitude of only a few hundred feet. Very impressive.

Love that stuff.  They fly over the area here traveling for an air show outside Houston each year.  The deep bass drone of the large radial engines is unlike anything else.  I hear that sound and go out to watch them.

On the other end of the scale, our VA home sits on a hill overlooking a valley very close to a low level military training route, so once a week or so we see a flight of two military fighters up close. Don't see them for long but hear them a good long while booming through the mountains. Cool stuff.

About a year ago, I was out front talking with the neighbors when some WWII-vintage warbirds flew over, headed northeast. Cool! A few minutes later a group of small, red jet trainers went past, same direction? RCAF Snowbirds?!? Shortly after that a squadron of F16s in unmistakable Thunderbirds colors. Hmmm, something's up.

Went inside and checked -- airshow in Sacramento. Cool stuff.

Every year when the Collings Foundation brings its roadshow to the area their B17 makes passes right over my house for two or three days. No complaints and come back soon! Love the sound of radials in the morning! Or any other time.

Oh Man! Just love that stuff. Hear the sound, radial engines are lovely. Feel the sound, that would be either a full afterburner formation takeoff of F-4 Phantoms or a pair of B-1 Bombers in formation take off with afterburners.

There are 2 Lancaster bombers still flying,one in the UK and one in Canada,both were in the UK last year to fly together,it is a treat to see any warbird still flying especially the big bombers,the cost to maintain them and fly them is enormous.

Lancs and Spits use Merlins I believe which are a supercharged V12 from memory rather than radials but the point is moot, they all sound incredible.

There are two Lancasters flying, the British one and the Canadian one. Last year the Canadian Lanc hopped across the pond to spend the summer in England paired up with the Battle of Britain plane.

Many years ago I was in the middle of British Columbia when the Canadian Lancaster flew down the center of Okanogan Lake, amazing. the sound of those Rolls Royse Merlin's purring away.

Most Spitfires used Merlins. Late ones, Griffons. I haven't heard a Griffon (that I know of) but plenty of Merlins, P51s and Reno Air Races. More music!

Rotec in Australia make smaller 100 and 150hp radials, and someone built a chopper like that with one in it. It was at Oshkosh this year and I saw it running. I used to think "why would you?" but it does actually sound quite good, better than I thought.....still be a bit of an act to ride though.

Merlins  or Radials idling just sound neat

Get yourself over to East Kirkby and see Just Jane running the third running Lanc
She fast taxis and could fly with some more money and runway lengthing.
Very impressive to stand 20 foot from her nose as they wind the engines up 2 at a time.
Plus if you're so inclined you can go for a taxi down the runway

The sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin is one of the sweetest sounds ever. So unique and distinctive. Years ago a man built a racing boat in mahogany with 2 Merlins in it! Unreal. When fired up they sound like a turbine winding up. He never got the 2 motors working together. But with one firing properly the boat went like stink.

We live 30 miles from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Airport in Hamilton, Ontario.  Get to see the Lancaster flyover the Niagara Falls several times a year.  One never tires of it and is ALWAYS a treat to see it.  The sound, oh the beautiful sound!!!
