2012 Norge

   I just bought Waltr's 2012 Norge. It has an accessory plug under the front fairing that I plan to use for a GPS. I found the male mate for the female plug at the local BMW shop. I'll wire that to a USB port that I had to order and my Garmin automotive Nuvi should come to life. I can't wait to put some serious miles on this bike. I have so much to learn. This ain't anything like my 01 EV.

Hi GD,   Finding the GPS plug under the tank can be a pain. I lifted my tank and skewed it sideways to get access. The suckers had cable tied it to the top front frame and then buried it amongst other cables. I cut off the original plug and found a cheaper alternative at Jaycar. About $10.  Cheers ian

DO NOT send the outlet power to a USB connector - it will fry your device! The on-bike outlet is NOT 5v (USB power level) but is still 12v nominal bike power. The TomTom kit sold for the Norge handled that in the GPS, but other GPS units will not have the transformer circuit. All Garmins powered through the USB port are expecting a 5v supply and an external transformer.

If the "USB port" you mention is a 12v to USB converter, then you're OK - but direct wiring is a definite mistake.

     Good catch IT. Makes sense. Parts guy at the BMW shop recommended the USB port.

Does your 2012 have the roller tappets?

   Yes, Walt told me it was one of the first roller tappet bikes in the country. I went back to the BMW shop today and changed my order from a USB port to a conventional power outlet. They were happy to help me.
