market value V50 MkIII?
« on: August 25, 2016, 02:47:07 PM »
Been looking for a small block project for a while and have identified one for sale in my area. Nice original condition Mk III, not run for a while but looks to be complete and has low mileage (7K). I think it's an '81 but am not positive. Any ideas as to value?

No more than $ 1500 for a non-runner, no matter how nice. *Should* be ok at that mileage but the usual caveats on exhaust valves & rear-drive pinion lube apply. III went back to points from the perfectly good Bosch electronic system in the II (& various contemporary Ducatis, Laverdas, and BMWs at least) so Dyna is the fix. Fun bikes and very capable.

I paid $2,500 for a 13,500 mile runner in March but the guy had to sell.  He tried for a year to sell it higher.

It ran but the Chinese pod air cleaners were junk and needed to be replaced.

I had to replace a leaky intake manifold gasket.

The tires were a few years old with no real mileage.

The carbs needed re-jetting badly

The dash lights needed replacing.  I used LED's

The points were way out of spec and a screw holding the points was busted so I re-timed her to the correct timing.

The side panel was busted and patched with epoxy.

The seat stitching is coming apart.

But hey I couldn't afford a V50 back when they came out and I didn't expect it to be like a new Honda.

I sold a root beer 1981 V50 MK3 26,563 miles on it  in good condition 2 years ago for $2,600. It was listed on CL for about a day before it sold. I wouldn't be afraid to spend $1,500 to $1,800 of the OP money on what he describes

A picture or 6 wouldn't hurt helping valuate the bike.

That's what I thought. I think it will be a pretty easy resto if we can agree on a price!

MkIIIs don't show up every day. The V50 engine is one of my favorites.. it's just a sweetheart. Even so, they're not especially valuable. If I *wanted* it, and it is complete, 2K would be my top dollar. Buying a non runner is a gamble, though.. so I'd try for $1500.
