Delete your browser cache?  It could be reading a cached version of the website (or lack thereof in your case).

This is what chrome tells me.
Today, we’re announcing the end of Chrome’s support for Windows XP, as well as Windows Vista, and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8, since these platforms are no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple. Starting April 2016, Chrome will continue to function on these platforms but will no longer receive updates and security fixes.
If you are still on one of these unsupported platforms, we encourage you to move to a newer operating system to ensure that you continue to receive the latest Chrome versions and features.

What do I need to do to get back the use of my email?

As a computer security guy, I have to say that if you are on one of these older operating systems you need to move forward. They are no longer patched for newly discovered security flaws, and have to be considered compromised and unsafe. I am no fan of Windows 10, but there are things you can do in between, as well as free versions of Linux that will run well even on older hardware.

That being said, there are versions of Firefox that run on the older operating systems that may be more effective than Chrome for gMail and other websites. Have you tried Firefox? I'd also suggest Opera, but their more recent versions have shifted to share the underlying software used by Chrome.

Do you have any other device that accesses your gMail account, such as a smartphone, etc.?

Which model of Mac Air? As far as I know, those can all run the current or recent versions of OS X. It's the old 32-bit machines that really got left behind by Apple...

I'm on OSX now.

There have been many versions of OS X - the current one is version 10.12, nicknamed "Sierra". The company currently only provides support for versions 10.9 and higher, and 10.9 is likely to drop off the list soon leaving 10.10, 10.11, and 10.12 as the supported versions. When an older version isn't supported, Apple (and many other vendors) won't provide fixes for newly discovered flaws in the operating system and software; that leaves customers exposed to attacks and no way to be protected from them.

You can likely upgrade your Macbook Air to a newer version of OS X if you choose; there haven't been any major changes to the design of the operating system that would prevent it. However, the performance of the machine might suffer unless you shut off a lot of extra functions that you don't use, or that your machine isn't equipped to handle anyway. The other option is to load Linux or Windows on the Macbook; either can be made to run on that hardware.

I went through this myself a while back when my early Mac Mini was dropped from support, since the last version of OS X it could run was 10.6.
