Today at my local airport

County airport of Newton, KS Pop 19,000. Annual EAA get together. About 100 planes. I have not been an active glider pilot for about five years but got to fly 90% of a flight in a Grob today. Reach 4K and had too burn altitude down after a half hour for the next ride.
T-33 early jet AF trainer. Amazing how basic they were:

Several power planes missed it by more than 50' although one made it within a yard. Glider pilots from day one are trained in accurate landings as you cannot go around, his main wheel caused a white puff of flour!

Cessna 190/195, my #2 lust...maybe #3...

The Bede 5,  waaaaaaaaaaay back when, I was at Oshkosh, and Jim Bede, ( God rest his soul ), had a Bede 5 mounted on a stinger in front of a Ford P/u.  Pre computer, simulator, anyway, I was all excited.  I am going to "fly" a Bede 5......I don't fit  , 

Bede had some good ideas, you just had to get past the Jim Bede thing......

Always wanted a C-190/195.  Could never afford to feed and care for it.  Loved the one I flew though.

I love the flying the Grob 103.  Huge cockpit, and the seats are like sitting in a la-z-boy.  It's my ship of choice when i take people up for rides.  Disassembly is another story.  Those wings are heavy. 

Interesting side note:  the hydraulic brake system is the same stuff used in BMW motorcycles.

No, It's a much bigger airplane. The 190 grew out of the prewar Cessna Airmaster series, which was powered by a Warner radial.

Not much aileron authority near the stall, I always felt a little more wary than usual if one was above me in a thermal !!!

Ok Chuck about the little Cessna, other than the angle of the main gear legs it would (and did), have me fooled, would'a sworn it was the same fuselage as the 150/152. Thanks, Huzo.

Sailplane ran out of fuel  and couldn't make it back to the airport.  Made an "emergency" landing at our strip and had to call the tow plane. I'll bet that was expensive..

Probably could have, but wouldn't have gotten him high enough to make it back to his field.

If he had tried Chuck would have discovered the backward wheelie! Seriously a glider in auto tow can generate a lot of pull to the rear of the tow vehicle. Best tow vehicles are large 60s and 70s cars with big blocks. Need strong 0-60 accelaration and weight.

Probably not as expensive as having a crew come out with a trailer.  The pilot is obligated to buy steak dinners for the retrieve crew.  Those boys can eat when it's on somebody else's nickel.  Don't ask me how I know.  It's all in good fun, though.

Our insurance only covers aero retrieves from airports.  If you land out in a pasture, it's time to call for the trailer.

Well, I was being a *little* facetious.. 
Back in the early 50s at Ace airport, where I learned to fly, (RIP) they used a winch powered by a V8 engine.

Sometimes the tow pilot will head off on the retreive after an aerotow, thus reducing the retreive time by 8 or so minutes. The problem is if you get to the field and decide it's unsuitable, then the tuggie will go home without you and you pay for the a/c and still no retrrive. I've been on both ends of that one !!!
