Speedo Malfunction. FIXED
« on: October 13, 2016, 08:30:00 AM »
2013 V7 Stone
Speedo pegged at 144mph when riding, at any actual speed.
Omph at standstill.
Normal behavior at start up.  All the way clockwise then returns to
0.
Tach fine
How does speedo read speed.  Sensor at back wheel?
Possible fixes?

Haven't had time to investigate future yet, so I thought I'd take advantage of the wealth of knowledge on this forum.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Welcome to the world of POS Italian speedos and tachs! (LOL)

Of all the "dozens" of Japanese motorcycles I owned and rode in the 70's and 80's, not one speedo or tach failure ever!! :thumb:

My Veglia Borletti tach died after 1500 miles (...and only 7500 original miles on my '98 Centauro)   Trying to find another one now...(unobtanium?!?) or...I will have to send it to a specialty shop to get repaired.

On a bike with ABS, this can be caused by the ECM not seeing the ABS sensor properly - but on your bike, that's not going to be the case.

As far as I know, the speedo sensor is on the transmission (gearbox); there are three elements to getting the right readout.
  • Speed sensor on the transmission
  • ECM
  • Display unit

One or more of them is apparently foobar.

Thanks for the replies.

Apparently on this model the speedo reads a electronic pulse from a sensor attached near the rear brake caliper.  A quick  cleaning and everything is working again.

10 min posting.
5 min reading responses.
15 min on the phone with Dusty
2 minutes cleaning

Fasest repair ever!

Though it was fun see the speedo pegged at 144mph on Talimena Drive.
