Best place for engine rebuild?

I have inherited a 1996 1100 Sport (Carbureted) with 40,000 miles.  It runs, but badly, and since I'm completely refreshing the bike, I'd like to rebuild the engine and transmission to have a perfect baseline.

I'm in the SF Bay Area, but happy to ship the parts.  I'm less worried about price than I am about ultimate quality and dealing with a non-flaky vendor.

All suggestions appreciated.

Even though the bike is 20 years old, 40k miles is awfully young for a rebuild. Valves and guides maybe. I could save you the trouble and give you 50 bucks for it as is.  :evil:

I'd start with a leak down and compression test and go from there.

Irish Mike (Irish Mike's Performance) is the go-to guy in Las Vegas for anything Italian. He's great guy, does top-notch work, tends to be very busy. Labor rates are fair to both him and the customer. I have been a customer of his for anything I can't do myself on my Guzzis.

He doesn't keep a website up, just a Facebook page.

I was going to suggest the coffee table in the lounge room.

A flat mate of mine did just that back in the early 1980's

I vote for the coffee table in the lounge, in the kitchen it may get contaminated by stray foodstuffs. I'd send the heads to Mike Rich Motorsports but call him first. I can't say enough good things about his work. I'll look for his website and modify this post later
