Handle bar question
« on: November 15, 2016, 04:28:37 AM »
Hey guys, I'm about to get my calvin setup from the mods the PO had made and am down to the last issue. He had changed the stock 07 Calvin bars to a set from an 03 cal. Stone set, which he said was flatter.  I did a 150 mile ride the other day and noticed I simply couldn't get comfortable. It felt like I was having to lean forward to get a good position holding the grips and I found myself wanting to use my finger tips on the grips so I could sit more in an upright position. By the way as an old ex motorcop I like sitting more upright. The PO is shipping the stock bars to me this week. Question, will putting the stock bars back on the Calvin improve my issues or make things worse or maybe just not enough different in the change to be worth the effort to change them. Thanks in advance for any comment, opinions or experience advice.

Interesting question.  I dont have my CalVin any more but I recall the bars were pretty comfy.

Can a current CalVin owner chime in with measurements?

if they don't seem right maybe just get some 2" risers for the bars you have now.. Rox risers are infinitely adjustable.

.   Foto, will the stock bars not do just and should that not help me sit up straighter and. Or have to reach constantly for the grips?

I'm not sure of the stock bars, the grip bend could turn your wrists in an uncomfortable angle.. you'll have to try them and see.. I never had a Vintage but the EV and Bassa bars were odd to me.. Stone/Jackal bars had the right angle.

Rox risers can rotate around the mount bar to bring bars up or back, very adjustable.

The stock bars, which you're waiting on, are very much like Harley FL bars.

They have more rise and pull back than the Stone bars.

It will be a noticeable "improvement", if upright seating is what you're looking for.

You can purchase just about any style of steel street bars and good selection of aluminum bars from numerous outlets.  Almost all are $50-$100.  I don't know if you have a standard or fat bar.

I would sit on the bike and determine where I want my hands and consider the height, pullback and angle from there.

I can only guess but it sounds like you might be happy the bars you're getting.

I sometimes find that after you ride a while, sometime your riding position and style changes and what you didn't like before, you might like later.

The Cal Vin has fat bars.

Thanks for the input guys. I for sure know what I didn't like about the stone bars. I guess the best thing to do is to put the stock bars on when they get here and ride with them for a while and go from there.
As always thanks for the input I have received. It's good to have the support of such a great amount of experience from so many veteran guzzi owners.  Thanks again!

I would consider looking at cycle ergo.com. You can plug in the model bike and make adjustments for rise and pull back.  My 04 EV had buckhorns that gave an upright seating position

I use Cali Stone bars on my Vintage. The stock "Beach Bars" are a good bit wider and I found that they put my wrists at an uncomfortable angle for long days. However, I have an taller aftermarket seat and ape-ishly long arms, so my experience may not match yours. Also, Guzzi "fatbars" are a little different than most others. Typical fat bars are 1 1/8" in diameter (28mm) but Guzzi fatbars are 30mm. So if you seek a replacement you'll either have to go with Guzzi bars or also replace your bar clamps...

thanks sheep for the input. The bars coming are actually the factory ones that came on my calvin. The PO replaced them with the 03 cali stone ones.

If you do have the 30mm bars, Rox risers do not fit. You need to get the 1 1/8 and ream out the bar end and then use some flat shim (like a soda/beer can) for the triple tree end. I had to do this to my EV with the buckhorn style bar. I also had to move the cables around a bit to get them to fit.

Thanks Tom, I don't think mounting the bars coming will have any issues as they are the factory one which came on her.

How tall are you?  I acquired a `77 Guzzi Convert. w/handlebar(22mm) too tall (buckhorn) for me and you can have it for $30 + shipping.   I'm 5' 10.5" tall w/30" inseam. It's like new.

Make sure you brake line is long enough. Years ago I lower my Mille's bars considerably and added SS lines. As I aged and spent less time in the mountains I went to put the 4" bars (original Mille I believe had 6" rise) and found my SS brake line was not long enough. Had to order a new SS brake line after I was half way into the transition.

Funnily on my CX100 when I went from clip ons to different touring handlebars all the cables, brake line reached.

When  switched from a buckhorn bar to a lower touring bar on my Convert.,  those cables worked too.   Just had more length than I  really needed.

Thanks for the responses guys, let me reiterate my issue. The PO changed from the stock Calvin bars to 03 stone bars. These stone bars make me lean forward to reach the grips and I want to sit upright. I'm going to put the stock  bars back on when I get them. If the stock bars work best for me I will give the stone bars to a member who ask to buy them. I have been given a couple pretty nice parts from the guys here who just ask me to pay it forward which intend to do.
