Back to Rocker's original point about gearing.

Yes, stock gearing could theoretically run to a high top speed but no way could it handle the torque loads of a 6, 7, 800 HP engine.  Since 99% of these guys build their cars for drag racing, I think even less likely that car went 200.

We've seen the video of the infamous red '68 Camaro, lots of money and R&D went into that car just to run 200 mph.

FL Straight Pooper ? You mean State Police?  Stock 86 Mustang's largest engine was a 302 rated at about 225 HP and reamined that engine into the 90's, maybe 140 MPH If you mean State Police, then they were hot rodding their pursuit cars with engine swaps?

Definitely a hot rodded "pursuit" vehicle. I was told that day I wouldn't be buying a "pursuit" Mustang at auction. They pulled the motors before selling these.  :copcar:

I can't really dispute your story any more that you can prove it. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and that's what the cop said to you.... Stories like this have been told by car guys for 60 years...It usually goes like this " My uncle bought a new car with a special high performance engine...There was one condition ,he couldn't sell it and the factory would buy it back...."  Back in the days before  cars had to meet emission standards ..If you showed a new car dealer enough money you could buy a 66 Chevy PU truck with a Corvette engine..But never from the factory other than a one off vehicle put together by engineers in a back room skunk works..

I'm in LowRyters camp on this, I don't buy.   Many super cars can't do 208mph.  Those that can have bookoo engineering and super advanced design to do so.

2011 mustangs do not have anything like state of the art suspension, even super hopped up ones, running 208 in a straight line on a public road might be possible for a very short time, but I see it as highly unlikely.

Thanks, that was what I was trying to say ( and failed, I think )

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

Jeez - my personal speed records (indicated & interpolated) consist of:

135 on an old Goldwing (indicated)
125 in an old Buick station wagon (indicator pegged and a little extra downhill)
110 on my Eldorado (indicated)
65 on an old ten-speed bicycle (shouted at me by the guy in the Ford Pinto)
50 on a road luge (indicated by the escort vehicle)

It's illegal here. People do it so cops won't see you braking from high speeds.

Article said he was a club member.  Those guys build some pretty impressive cars and don't exactly follow all the rules.  They usually do their stuff in the wee hours of the morning when very little traffic is out and about, and they have spotters watching long stretches of roads for LEOs.  Sort of like the 1/8 mile drag racing clubs, without the hokey Discovery Channel TV show.

I've seen a couple of their cars and I believe they are capable of those speeds.

In WA and AK the state cops run confiscated hot-rodded cars -- some of them exotics.  Some they plaster with big signs announcing they are confiscated vehicles, and some they don't mark at all.

As to the OP --  top gear is still top gear.  Unless there are ratio mods, redline still beats HP for top end.

I haven't watched it in a while but it seems to me the boys in "Street Outlaws" had some machines that would easily top 200 mph. Some were actually daily drivers, not just trailered around. Some of those cars were Pro Stock machines slightly detuned for the street. Way more than 800 HP.

As for the 200+ MPH being impossible , given enough HP , a fairly tall final drive , and enough courage... In these days of 800+ HP from streetable engines it is possible . As for the suspension not being up to the job , dunno , modern Mustangs have IRS , and with some mods who knows . Deal is , I wasn't there . The first time someone said to me that their liter bike would go 70 MPH in first gear I was doubtful . Damned if the owner didn't prove it .

What is he claiming that he's doing ? Are we to assume he hasn't got the rear wheels off the ground on blocks? I'm not sure where the enjoyment bit is. What have I missed ?

Here in middle America, there are a bunch of car enthusiast who mod their cars out for specific feats.  Some are chasing the 10 second quarter mile and others are going after the 200 MPH mark.  The video was about a guy that ran his car up to 201 MPH (per his phone GPS App) and recorded it.  I guess he could have faked it all, the lights in the windshield and the sound of the motor and the tach needle and the phone app display. Or he could have spent the time and money to achieve the speed he was going after.

I posted the video to show that there are some people out there that do this sort of stuff and the 200 MPH mark is not really unfathomable. Granted we don't see it everyday posted on the news, but that's the ticket. Not easy. but doable.

The 208mph may have just been hit for a few seconds. Interesting that the article says "Clocked at 176mph" then later the officer says the car "hit 208mph", didn't say clocked. Still 176mph is impressive and a bit fast for the street.

Like what Leno say's, nowadays 400hp just get's you into the game.

A new GTI is quicker than a old school Challenger 426 Hemi.

so far as "quick" as in accccceeeelllllllll llleration.

The GTI ain't on the same planet as a Hemi.  New one or old.

Believe me, if I wanted to drive one every day, I'd pick the GTI.  They just drive and handle great.  But the Elephant is a legend for a reason.
