Sorry for the NGC but I just had to post this.
I've always been a big Steve McQueen fan and remember watching Bullitt in the Theater when it first came out....in my mind was and always has been the greatest automotive chase scene Hollywood ever produced...all 10 minutes of it!
My town...Traverse City is the home of Hagerty Collectable Car insurance and they were involved in bringing this hidden gem back for us to see again. Arguably the most sought after film related car on the planet. For some an old Junker....for others the Grail
it was pretty cool to have it visit just a few blocks away :) Hagerty published a nice article that tells the entire story of this car...you can find it on their website on line. I love the letter from Steve to the owner...what a hoot. This car was a daily driver in NJ for a few years by the owners wife...then sat in a series of barns until 2016. Pretty cool piece of automotive history.

I watched some sort of a car show a few years ago were they were making a modern version of that car. A relative of Steve's, maybe his son, was going through some changes that Steve made on that car for the movie. I seem to remember that they were minor cosmetic things that really made a huge difference on how the car looked. Best chase scene ever for sure!

Yes that's covered in the article. Several changes at the rear panel for cosmetics...and other changes to hang camera gear brackets under the rocker panels..Some additional beefing up of the suspension and such.
There was a body shop that found the sister car...There were two cars purchased for the film...one that did the big air stunts that was pretty trashed after parts of that scene and in a junk yard in NM which was somewhat restorable using 80% non original parts.
This car was always intact and a runner....used for the non jumping scenes and the rest of the movie.

bottom line, it's junked up 390 Mustang.  Only 50 years older.

Having written that, I wouldn't mind having the 2019 Bullet but not for $50k+asking price

$4.5M on junked up 390 Mustang.  it wasn't even a good car when it was new.

A guy I know has McQueen's Boeing Stearman, with FAA tail number that SM gave it - same as his detention school number, a joke.  I'm fairly certain he didn't pay $4.5M  and its a hell of lot more interesting to me than an old big block Mustang.

Bud Ekins drove most of the stunts but I believe that Steve "lost it" and drove it in the ditch and they kept that in the movie.

The car is still a junked up 390 Mustang.

Come on! The car didn't even have a posi differential, one rear tire burn outs so that was always pathetic!!

Steve McQueen drove a good share of the scenes....from inside the car when the rear view mirror is up showing SM's reflection it's him....when the mirror is pointed downward it's Ekins. MC deliberately had his head as far out of the window as he could in his scenes.

it's a junked up Mustang worth millions to some...lots and lots of better "stuff' to buy for 4.5...interesting, not inspiring
I would have loved to drive it

I saw a feature on TV this week about the re-emergence of the Bullitt Mustang.  The mods for filming, such as the camera mounts on the frame and hole in the trunk floor for the smoke generator, were shown and described.

The Mustang may have been a POS car, by the standards of its time or now, but this one is an ICONIC car, nonetheless.  Just like the Lotus Seven (KAR-120C) driven by Number Six in "The Prisoner."

As for McQueen doing the stunt driving, as I remember it he insisted on driving, and he did until he wiped out a camera position trying to make a turn in town.  That shot was left in the film.

Huge Steve McQueen fan..."The King of Cool..." he was the real deal with cars and motorcycles.  Seeing the movie "BULLIT" and that legendary chase scene on the big screen as a kid was fabulous!!

I have a standard 1967 Mustang "Sports Sprint" (289 V8 AT), which belonged to my wife's grandmother...Howev er, I would love to own a hopped up '68 390 Mustang! :thumb: :1:

There was a slightly updated version from a TV show, they even included the green VW Beetle that was passed about 3 times in the original.
