Sport 1100 Side stand snapped
« on: November 14, 2016, 01:48:56 PM »
Had my bikes shipped cross country this last week and the 1996 Sport 1100 side stand snapped (somehow) during the haul.  I checked Harper's for a replacement with no luck.  Any thoughts on a back-up plan?

It may have a spare in my MG box. It would be an alloy stand from a 97. if I have it,  it's yours for yet he price of postage. I will pm you.

I know... Problem is I'm not sure if the transport company loaded it or the dealer. I wasn't there for it and they both don't want to do/admit anything but will pay for the damage. Also broke the bearing joint on the shifter and put a decent scratch on the tail.

The side stand is hollow, isn't it? Mine is, and flexes alarmingly under load. Is there any chance of welding in a (stiffening) rod? It can then become your spare, until you get around to relocating the side stand to the pork chop - I've seen Suzuki stands attached there to good effect.

Thank you for the recommendations.  I spoke with Mark who put me in touch with someone else and then...couldn't find one of these anywhere!

I would up purchasing a v11 stand from Harper's.  It was any easy fix.  However, I'm still concerned about the lean angle.  An additional inch or two on the stand foot would solve the problem.  Anyone have any luck with adding some depth to the stand? I know there are some aftermarket universal solutions.  Not sure if I've seen any guzzi specific.

Not being satisfied with the lean angle of my Bassa, I played around with some thick copper wire, and eventually contrived a ... fixture ... that fitted into the zone where the stand rests on the bike when deployed.

It worked great ... but was just a shade shy of where I wanted it to be. So I slid a dime under the wire. It's perfect. The fixture and the dime are still there after thousands of miles.

Next week, I might tell you about the two twenty-five cent pieces I used to address that annoying intermittent buzzing at the brake pedal.

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

pull the fork tubes up in the triple clamp. it'll speed up the steering just a bit, and that's a plus

I'm currently running a V11 sidestand on my Sport 1100.  Really only did that because of the wire heel tab on the V11 stand.

My Sport 1100 really leaned when the forks were in stock ride height.  As noted by Yogi, if you lower the front by sliding the tubes, the lean angle is less of a problem.  Plus, the bike turns in better.  I lowered the forks on my Sport 1100 20mm / 0.8".

Over the years I've seen a lot of people add pads to the bottoms of the sidestands on Sport 1100s and on Ducatis.

Here's one example:

You could get a few of those pads out of a hockey puck. Might be able to make them even a bit larger, and that would help them frm sinking in mud or hot pavement. Also make a good toe holder/grip when putting it down or lifting it up.

Could you post a pic of the break?
There could have been a hairline fracture. By not having a return spring, if a rider didn't retract the stand before takeoff........yes I did it, just once.

Norm, you can put a dime there, but you need to report it here as a washer.  A REAL guzzisti wouldn't invest a dime into the fix.  You'll lose your red suspenders for that.   :bike-037:

Washers are kinda pricey.  I think I'd opt for an electrical box knockout slug. You can pick them up off the ground for free at construction sites.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!
