New bikes (to us) as we pull through winter
« on: February 11, 2017, 08:40:31 AM »
The winter doldrums let us dream...
Show us your new ride come spring.
I'm looking forward to a new experience.  For the first time I'm venturing outside Guzzidom with a Nighthawk 700s. I've ridden it a couple times and should fit my needs just fine.

4 vpc (hydraulic)
Shaft drive
Air cooled (w/oil cooler)
6 gear
Around 80 hp (72 rw)
515 lbs or so.

She will get up and move when stoked.

I haven't yet taken delivery of my 2014 CB1100 Standard (any color you want as long as it's black!)  This link will take you to a pic of a 2014 identical to mine.  Still keeping and riding my '91 R100GS and 2008 1200 Sport.  They're going nowhere.
I'm hopeful the stock ergonomics don't require handlebar, saddle, or foot peg replacement.  Some long rides on the CB will tell.

Bob, I'm jealous!  It's that new CB that got me started thinking about an inline 4. There's one in my neighborhood that runs past and his sounds great. My buddy bought this Nighthawk a couple years back and re-jetted, etc. and runs linear now. He wanted to let it go because he's just too big of a guy and the seat is way narrow for him; wide for me. I haven't ridden my Lemans V11 for a couple years so we are trading bikes. Don't think I'm not getting some $$ out of it also 'cause I am. So, it's win/win for both of us. Something was telling me I needed a change and it was probably that CB1100 that keeps going by. Enjoy that ride!!

I had two of these (in Canadian 750cc guise) back in the day.  First was bought brand new in '86 as left over stock (there was a lot of that then).  MSRP was $4600, and I paid $3499.   Wonderful bike, incredibly low maintenance, handled well, very comfortable.  Not far off the performance of the Interceptor, at the time.  I like it so much that I bought another in '90 and enjoyed it for a few years until I bought a Goldwing to go touring on.  The second one was just as good!

Enjoy it... even if it is the slower blue one.     (My friend had a blue one.)

Cheers,

I don't think I've ever seen a nicer looking Nighthawk.

There is so much they got right on this Nighthawk it's hard to dismiss it based on function and ease of maintenance. As another friend I have that's a Honda nut says, "500 mile oil changes and it will last you your lifetime". 20,000 mile drive (shaft) oil changes. How can you complain with that!!??
Fun factor I will have to see about, but the two rides I took were smooth as silk and deceptively fast. It's no Guzzi, but I'm getting it for different purposes. There's something to say for a bike that's cheap (Guzzi content) and hits many of the right buttons.

Kevdog - one thing I wish Honda had included with the CB1100 is hydraulic-adjusted valves, instead of shim under bucket.  The initial interval is short (8000 miles) but owners with fairly high mileage find that after the initial check, they are able to stretch the intervals out to much further than 8k.

My local independent bike shop that builds up Kaw KZ and Hayabusa-based turbo drag bikes, said the main issue with Honda's (Nighthawk) hydraulic lifters was caused by owners who didn't change oil/filter at prescribed intervals, but that if changes were made per schedule, they saw very few issues with the hydraulic lifters.

NICE Nighthawk, by the way!

Yeah, just change the oil every two tanks of gas!

Shaun,
Interesting you owned two of these. Yeah, you guys had the 750 version, we had the tariff version. I haven't heard much bad about them as they certainly got some of the best things going at the time. Honda sure had some cool stuff going.

That Nighthawk is a good looking bike! With hydraulic lifters and a shaft drive it certainly sounds easy to live with.
I don't recall ever seeing one and I can only assume the European version must have had different (less attractive) body work?
Congrats on the new bike!

That's one nice R9T.  Don't think I could ride it for many miles without cramping up, but what the hell, I'm 74.  If I could  run the clock back 20 - 25 years, I'd probably be hot for this bike.  Saw it at the International Motorcycle Show in Cleveland this January.  Lovely machine!

It does look a bit of a torture rack, the foot peg position especially.
