Greetings -

I'm still getting familiar with my California Custom, awaiting return from its first service at 900 miles.

To my surprise the dealer told me that the rear differential is leaking and needs replacement.  Not sure what that involves, or how long it will take.  Dealer just found the problem yesterday, has yet to check on part availability and timing.

I'm not angry, just disappointed.  It's my third Guzzi and I was hoping that the third time would be the charm since I had issues with both my earlier California (75th anniversary edition) and the Griso 1100 4V.  The first Cali had lots of mechanical and cosmetic issues, but I put up with it because I loved the bike.  The Griso was too frustrating to keep - computer kept going out, almost constant electronic problems.  Sold it in frustration and paid the "Guzzi tax" - 50% loss in less than two years.

I hoped that this time would be different - it's too early to pass judgment, but this isn't the start I wanted.  Despite the leak the Custom 1400 is by far the best Guzzi I've owned, and until this happened my favorite bike overall (I've owned over 15 motorcycles over the years).  I'm going to wait for the repair and continue ownership - it's too nice a machine to give up over one problem, and I'm hopeful that the fix will be problem free.

wow,  So sorry.  Hopefully you can continue to ride it while the part is on order.

That's a new bike and it must be disappointing, I think you love it so it's worth trying for a while
I have an 02 Cal Stone and I keep an 04 Sportster 1200R roadster in the garage, not much can go wrong with it so,I have a reliable backup. I wish MG would start a lease finance program like Ducati started
And let people turn in for another bike, maybe without even waiting a yr. that way us motorcycle obsessionists could indulge in our addiction.

Leaking at hub output?
Why not just replace the seal?

Happened on my 2013 Touring at about 1,500km. The drive was swapped for new and the replacement, with 18,000km up is fine. The amount of oil that leaked was negligible, but it made a mess. I kept riding until the part arrived, adding a few thousand kilometres.

Thanks for the replies.  The dealer is 175 miles away - not worth taking it home and risking problems.   Dealer suggests not riding it until it's fixed.  Shouldn't be a very long wait for parts.  I'm staying optimistic, but it is frustrating.

Understand your frustration as have had some issues with my Norge, but damn they are nice bikes so hope this will be your only problem with many miles of smiles to follow.
