Seasonal goodies
« on: March 01, 2017, 08:54:05 PM »
Now that Mardigras is over and done with, I will be missing King Cakes.  Oh well, the next season is already being put out on the shelves.

Easter candy season is upon us.

My favorite used to be Cadberry Eggs, but Kraft really missed that up when they bought out the brand.  I really preferred the dark chocolate ones, but not anymore.

Elmers is our local confectionery in the New Orleans area and they make fine chocolate egg, and many other flavors.  their Chocolate isn't as good as the top tier chcoclates, but it is very good, and the price is very good being local.

I like the sold bunnies, not from Franklin or the other cheap chocolates.

I despise the peeps, nasty, nasty nasty.

do you have particular candy that you what for all year as it is a season treat

Have to disagree on the Peep thing.  I dearly love them, kill them quick by biting the heads off first.  They are even better when a little stale and start to harden up.  Been known to go through a two or three packs of chicks at one sitting with cold milk on the side...........

For years we bought our local favorite, Fannie May Candy.  Sadly, it was sold several years ago and the quality just isn't the same.

For the past several years we have been buying See's Candies.  We had a retail store not far from home, but now the closest one is a bit of a drive.  Instead, we order online and have been very pleased with the service as well as the product.

See's has a few unique novelty items (like Irish Potatoes for St, Patricks' Day) that are both unique and quite good.  the Easter bunnies are unfortunately not solid, but very good quality nonetheless.  They are covered in foil and my grandkids are crazy for them.  They also have a full range of Easter goodies.

Why do companies buy other companies and immediately start messing with the products that made the company worth buying?

I haven't See's candies in a long time, I remember them.  they were always a top tier candy.

Jelly  beans of good quality are hard to come by.  I forget the brand but I really like the ones that are smaller with lots of colors and flavors.  These aren't the cheap ones.

All of RI can be considered to be a kind of Little Italy, and the the seasonal treat we look forward to is zeppole, a cream filled puff pastry to celebrate St. Joseph's day, March 15.  You don't have to be either Catholic or Italian to start to crave these around the beginning of March, and then overdose on them during the next couple of weeks.  Every Italian bakery, and many non-Italian ones as well, compete to make the most indulgent zeppole, and there are even contests with several categories (biggest, creamiest, best chocolate zeppole, etc.).  We take our food orgies seriously here.

For me it has always been the pure maple sugar candy.

I like Reese's cups, but LOVE the Reese's Easter eggs--dunno if they change the ratio of chocolate to peanut butter, or just the placebo effect of them being available only seasonally, but I could eat myself sick on those huevos.

Not candy but in Germany when the strawberries get ripe  (soon ) the bakeries offer an "erdbeerplunder" or strawberry tart, kinda thing.

Think a danish with vanilla pudding on top and covered with sliced strawberries. Oh man! One is enough to fill you up. With a cup of Joe, pure joy!

Lots of 'confectioneries' selling assorted  chocolates all year round. If you have a sweet tooth, Germany has the sweets.

Anybody remember Bonomo Turkish Taffy.  Crack it on the counter, it would shatter into pieces, then chew like crazy.  Probably take every filling and crown out of my mouth now...........

You're thinking of Jelly Belly,  <https://www.jellybelly.com/online-candy-store>

They are available at Costco in a large (3#?) container for a good price.  We usually buy these to spread around the See's chocolates in our grandkids' Easter baskets.  You've got good taste!

:1: on the See's candies. Whatever the season their  specialty candies are great. My year round favorite for the last 50 years is the See's Lollypop,
 chocolate of course.
