EV VIN to inquire about recalls...?
« on: March 12, 2017, 07:46:27 AM »

I hope you guys don't tire of my asking questions about EVs, after all though, they are the new T-3... for me.

During my search for an EV, which I have found, a fellow on the East coast with a 2002 EV that he is half-heartedly trying to sell for his older Father.

So, I have the VIN and would like to stablish whether that year was effected by a need to even check on any recalls.  Can I just contact an active dealer and provide the umber to find out or is the Guzzi network not sophisticated enough to look up that kinda thing...?  IS there a dealer wide database that one could take a peek at...?

Ultimately I would like to know two things, Applicable Recalls and IF they were accomplished.

I know quite few folks here have the '02 models and hopefully they can chime in, so I may just buy it if it checks out.

Thanks much,
Rob

Any dealer w/a subscription (current dealer) can look up if any and completion of such. You can also go back and see tech bulitans to around 05. That is when they started the extranet site.

I do remember reading here that some dealers took the $$$ for the recalls and never did them. This was mostly associated with the hydro recall. So even if it was listed as done you should still pull a valve cover to check for yourself. :(

Thanks guys...

Very fast results with that app.

I am a tad confused as the EV is reported to be a 2002 model.  Perhaps the app is indicating a 2001 build for a 2002. ?

I did not include the VIN here.

Wow, they must have seen the paint job.

Wait, isn't it an 04?

Oh, no, no...  Read the opening post.  I found yet another concurrently to looking for the beautiful paint number which, yes, is an '04.  Just an odd coincidence that they are both the same stock color.

The one I ran the VIN on for recalls was reported to be a 2002 but the number comes back different, I think it is the build date.  I'll call the seller tomorrow.

Best,
Rob

Moto Guzzi's vin # information from this bike's era is notoriously erronious, please do not rely on it, your life and others may be at risk!! In the case of a broken lower triple tree the results could be catastrophic! The lifter/camshaft problem could totally destroy the engine including an engine lockup!

I know I sound hysterical but things can and do happen. These things can be checked by a good mechanic and corrected if need be. I have seen the damage done to these engines if run too long before correction. Oil pumps destroyed, metal embedded in piston skirts, and embedded in rod bearings and found throughout the engine oiling system. Please have these things verified by someone you trust.

Brian,
I realize that the Hydro recall is a very serious one, the cracked triple trees also...  I was fortunate enough to have my first 2004 EVT receive  the Cam Recall very early on, it was not part of the triple tree recall.  I had heard horror stories about those engines that were not caught prior to coming undone... not good.

So I checked into both the 2002 that is for sale in NJ and posted that a couple of posts back and the 2004 that I just bought.

2002 - Results, no recalls.

Next, out of curiosity, I also ran the one I have committed to buy, in fact paid for.  This one has in fact had the Hydro recall and the Triple Tree recall accomplished.

Results:

The sent VIN number is : ZGUKDD00X4M112353
The request has been forwarded. Result of request:

NO recall campaigns are pending for this vehicle

CALIF.EV TOUR 2004 US ROSSO

So I wonder if the data base lists the '04 as No Recalls or in that the recalls have been done, it is NOW listed as No Recalls or or if, as you say, the info is notoriously erronious..?  Who knows...?

Thanks,
Rob

My '04 only showed the triple clamp being done and nothing pending.

I have checked for all the update parts and they are installed. But the web site does not list the update as being done.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. I have done the recall work on bikes that had supposedly been done as have others! Whether the previous dealer created a fraudulent warranty claim or not is inconsequential. The information in the Moto Guzzi database is not reliable. The work that has been reportedly done may not have been done. Please check yourself or have a qualified person check. Hopefully this is a clearer statement.

Oh you were clear about the recall process and I agree that the Moto Guzzi database is probably not reliable.

The '04 that I just bought has had the recall performed and I obtained that information from a very reputable wrench, in your state in fact... He owned the EV since there was only 700 miles on it.  Very confident I the purchase.

I guess when the EVT shows up I can pop a valve cover off to have a peek, ya know, just to be certain.

Thanks,
Rob

Has anyone seen a bad/broken/cracked lower triple tree in real life?

When I put my 2003 vin in the blank, it comes back as an invalid number.

When I put my 2003 vin in the blank, it comes back as an invalid number.

I have only seen photos of the cracks, not one in my hand. The crack was at the area where the stem was pressed into the lower tree bore and moved outward, I often wondered if it was from an incorrect press fit dimension and it cracked when the stem was pushed in.

You must be fat-fingering the VIN, I put two in two and they popped up.

Try again, seventeen (17) characters long.
