...Ask the guys with the early Stelvio forks about torquing those pinch bolts..
OK, I did some research:  http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=78773.0;nowap

No less an authority than Pete Roper wrote (in part):  "The only reason the castings crack is because they get over tightened by a gorilla. This is the reason we have inch/pound torque wrenches."

But, of course, others, including Lannis,  disagreed.

Yes, and still do, although I 'm sure Pete has better things to do that refute the above assertions.

Pete's a good guy, a great resource for this board, I've got clippings from his "How To" postings and I'm an owner and cheerleader for his CARC breather, but he's not always right about everything, as he'll be the first to admit if the subject of "8V flat tappet problem genesis" is brought up, circa 2013.

Pete went from cursing people up street and down alley who were concerned about their 8V flat tappets coming apart as moaning, mewling, hyperventilating fuqtards who needed to cut the apron strings and RIDE their damn bulletproof Guzzis instead of wringing their limp hands worrying about tappets ... to today's position of "They're ALL failing, NONE of them were done right, stop your bike right now and get it fixed."

I'll continue to keep and add to my "Roper's Renches" scrapbook, but I'm with Chuck on this one.

FWIW: this is from MG V7II service manual:

2 Screw fixing wheel axle to right fork leg M6x30 2 10 Nm (7.37 lbf ft) Tighten using a 1-2-1 sequence

In other words, Torque one screw, torque the second screw, torque the first screw again, stop, you are done.

And that works.

It's the 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2 in an attempt to "meet the torque spec" and see the "right number" on the dial that breaks clamps.

Bet they didn't have that spec in the original Stelvio manual!!   :thumb:

Thanks for that info.

^^^^ right. When torquing a wooden propeller.. an extreme case, I know.. with 6 bolts, if you start and go around the circle, by the time you get back to the first, it will be totally loose. If you continue doing this, the "crush plate" will eventually crush that several hundred dollar propeller. You have to do 2 triangles of 3 bolts a couple of times.
It's the same technique, really, and the 1-2-1 and *stopping* is good.
