One for the Roo haters
« on: May 05, 2017, 12:33:03 AM »
To follow on from dog lovers and bloody roos threads

Took 3 of them to get enough skin, thanks for the sacrifice, roos, awesome.

For those that don't know what a thick old rooskin can look like, here's one of lids

A bit of detail ,was a few hours to do, nothing good is easy

As with all my bags, no stitching whatsoever, the only joins are lid to bag (prob technically a pouch) , strap & buckles, all blind
Testing in Uk / Europe over summer, normally I don't do throwover, prefer fixed but these as throwovers may be my fly n ride choice, light as a very light thing so perfect for cabin baggage.

Very nice!
Nice job, saw some Roos yesterday in a paddock a bit north of Coburg. Plus ate a bit of one since arriving here a couple of weeks ago, nice.

Roo skin is for its' weight, the strongest and most pliable leather.  I have made many things from Roo,
Most notably bull whips and snake whips.
But how did you combine three skins without stitches?

I think he uses the cut from where the baby sit, naturally formed pocket.

I take "no stitching" to mean something nothing on the outside.  Different from "no stitches", which would require all that stuff to be done with glue or something.  I didn't get that at first either, but "all blind" was the clue.  Nice, should live longer that way.

I always preferred to sew things inside out then invert them for the no visible stitches effect.
The whips I braided with twelve to twenty strands in the Aussie herring bone pattern, with the finished product from 12 to 20 feet long and lead shot down the core for power and accuracy control.  With my 16 footer in the snake whip
design, I would stand the length of the whip away from a bush full of yellow jackets and by hitting them with the cracker
they would explode in yellow dust puff.  I wasn't an efficient way to get rid of them but it was enormously satisfying.
I got good enough hah I had about an 80 % hit ratio.

If I couldn't use the internal stitch, I used a baseball stitch using two needles and threads.

3 skins because only one was big enough to get bag and lid. One for next bag, another for 2nd lid
No  stitching at all, one FO big skin wet moulded and folded, then glued bone dry before oiling.
Buckle hinges are chicago screwed behind strap keeper (blind)
Strap is glued to inside of lid (blind, slot cut in lid)
Lid is glued to bag, 2 chicago screws at ends (only blind cos back of bag so not visible)
Same glue that keeps your soles on, is forever
These first go at roo but have been making wet moulded + glued cowhide bags for a while, cutting out stitches was priority, stitches will always fail in the end, stitch holes all become one hole
My RTW bags were made for me in NZ in 81, hand stitched and fantastic, he said they'd last forever but by 2007 there was nothing left to repair. They hang on my wall as souvenir.
So I got into making really forever leather bags, roo I needed to do, will make more when back in Oz after winter's gone

I think he uses the cut from where the baby sit, naturally formed pocket.

Good idea Phang but wouldn't actually work, female pouch is infinitely stretchable, you see big youngsters  getting back in . don't think it's possible to hold a shape with belly
But for a messenger bag over your shoulder could be clever, I'll ask my tannery.

When I shot muzzle loading rifle I had a bag made from a roo scrotem that could hold 80 .50 bullets.
So I guess I used it for the same thing the roo did.  I carried my balls in it.
