Sometimes even English to 'Murican is dangerous and a bit confusing . Some of the old Brit car and motorbike manuals mentioned that if the engine failed to start to check the petrol level with a torch

Yeah , now you tell me

Actually I knew that having been immersed in the oddities of English English for years . However a service buddy did wake me up very early one morning wondering why it would be prudent to place his tool kit in his boots . I explained that "boot" meant trunk in 'Murican , which him being from a very rural background confused him even more , the term "trunk" meant foot locker to him , that compartment in the back is known as a "turtle hull" . Which of course confused me , so I told him to go away so I could go back to sleep

Oh yeh, we have the same problem with our Austrian neighbors.

Aussie asked me where he could get some MINCE once so I sent him next door to the butchers shop.

He was after MINTS of course but they do talk funny over here in Oz

Hi Phang, just woke up and reading your reply again re flash lights.

Dad had a big old silver thing that took 3 of the big D cells. He always told us it's a flash light, not a torch. You should always press the button in briefly when you want light, as opposed to turning it on with the slide switch.

This to conserve batteries of course, they weren't cheap back then, come to think of it they still aren't. We used to heat them in the oven to give a little extra life.

I tried that with a button cell once on a gas flame and it exploded with a hell of a bang.

None of you buggers ever had to *interpret* a seventies Laverda manual then?

They elevated *Manglish* to the level of an art form!

At least the Japanese tried, (Although my English translation Lilac manuals came a very close second! They too were awesome in the true sense of the word!)
