Scares me when this happens (misread tire condition)
« on: August 14, 2018, 01:30:32 PM »
I've only ever done this with one other tire.   And it was probably the same brand.   :violent1:
I've found that different tires wear differently and have to be more careful "reading" the amount of usable rubber is left.  This tire came on the Breva I purchased used, so I should have changed it earlier.  We've added 3000 miles or so to the ODO since purchase.
And we seem to wear different tires in different patterns.  Flat spot across the center, raising the center on other tires, and wearing one side more than the other on yet other tires.
A new Shinko Verge 2X is mounted up now.  (it was ordered before I noticed the true condition of this tire)  It has decent grooves across the surface of the tire,  so hopefully easier to figure how rubber is left.

No comments about my rocket ship and flames mountain bike sock please. (if you click for full rez)

I've ridden several hundred miles on worse than that...not by choice, of course...

I did that with the last rear tire on my Triumph.   I wanted to get 7500 miles out of it ... it was a bit worn but still looked pretty good, I checked it after every ride.

Got back from a 150 mile ride and it looked like that, at 7550 miles.   Once they're thin, it doesn't take long to get to the cords!  Gotta be careful on a long trip ....

I've ran the Verg 2X on my VFR and it is a durable and good handling tire. FWIW

I am conservative on tires and never run past the ware bars.(unless no choice).

I never leave on a trip more that 1000 miles ,(one way), w/o new tires and since I have extra wheels or I can remount the worn tire later.

Its a matter of experience (some bad) and not worth the risk.

I have 1500 miles on the new tire, and was planning on taking off on a 5000 mile trip next month, figuring I had 1000 miles in tire wear in hand after the trip based on the last tire's life.

Now you've cost me $250 that I wasn't going to spend until wintertime .... !

Ah, but you'll have peace of mind !

AND I'll be a tire ahead when the new one wears out.  That's the good part.

It's just that this month I've already bought a new Stihl 91 weed-eater, a pair of Sena 30 helmet systems for talking back and forth between Fay and I, a new set of tires for the pickup truck, and I'm going to have to buy 2 complete new riding outfits at probably $1200 a pop.   My pension checks will be encumbered until Christmas ..... !!   :embarrassed:   :undecided:
