The America's Cup Rocks
« on: June 07, 2017, 04:27:43 AM »
Finally found a way to watch it last night.

Damn those cats are fast - 48knots for one boat and don't they accelerate

I'd love a ride and I know I'd be scared silly but...just WOW

Even SWMBO was impressed

Did you see the film of the New Zealand catamaran taking a nose dive at 40 knots or so?  Spectacular!  Some of the crew were thrown overboard, but it appears no one was hurt and the boat did not look significantly damaged, despite being swamped.

Wasn't that Conner bloke a snivelling piece of work back in the glory days when Allan Bond and John Bertrand kicked the Yanks asses. We gave y'all a string of race victories just to make a fight of it and the first time Conner got a smack under the ear by the Aussies, he panicked and went to water, ( so to speak), Captain Bloody Pugwash could have done better in the Black Pig, the Yanks gave up without so much as a childish whimper. Got nothing to do with now, but jeez it was good. Just sayin'

How well I remember!

Having been in Newport after a race it was quite the atmosphere.  And, if you ever get the chance to sail on a 12 metre replica of the older America's Cup boats (there are several around) DO IT.  I got to tack one at Hampton Roads and it was UNREAL to do.  Even without that experience being on that boat was one of the best days ever.

Oh yes! Years ago my dad and me were invited to spend a day on the (then ex-) Sverige, a challenger of the 23th America´s cup. I even was allowed to be at the helm (a tiller on this ship!) for several hours. It of course changed our attitude from motor boats to sailboats at once. My dad got rid of his twin-screw Diesel Yacht from Holland and bought a Poul Elvstroem sailboat of 38 feet at once, I have a 16-feet trailer-sailboat since.

But a 12 m R-Yacht is incredible. Today´s America´s Cup - boats are spaceships!

I am envious, just envious.  Of those who get to watch and especially those who get to sail.

Here in Germany the races are broadcasted in "Servus TV", an Austrian station owned by Mr. Mateschitz, who also owns "Red Bull".

Simply thrilling to watch...I love the Land Rover boat...just a work of art!  Seeing these boats "fly" on the water is amazing...a few years ago when they were in San Francisco, I was lucky to be there for a weekend and see them all down at the piers, great educational films, even more impressive is the kit and gear all the guys have to wear while on the boat.

Great sport indeed to watch!

One interesting thing i noticed this year I don't think I had seen before were the grinders no longer doing it by hand, but on bicycles...quite innovative to use leg power instead of arm power.

The other thing about the LR team is the team lead  This is Martin Whitmarsh who was the boss of the Maclaren F1 team for a while.

So cutting edge motor racing technology being applied to yacht racing.

They even transmit live data back to HQ in Portsmouth UK

The Brits vs. the Yanks was an amazing race last week.  The Land Rover took a crazy start line and the boats got on separate ends of the course.  This resulted in a serious game of chicken that was great to watch.

Very interesting...did not know that!  Quite the pedigree he's got then...I'm wonder if they're live streaming to Solihull as well I should hope!  :)

Here's THE pitchpole. We thought we might be out of the game!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jli_m5zm91g

The pushbike thing would seem to be a better way to power the hydrolics and this time (unlike the foils) we managed to keep it quiet enough for long enough so that it wasn't copied by all and sundry.  Whether it ultimately leads to any improvement to boat speed though is open to question. Perhaps an improvement in control.

I have yet to find a place where I can watch the whole races too. It's available on Sky here but I don't pay for TV.

So they did Roy but it's a tough come back from 2 races down due to a broken boat when you're racing a boat as fast as the Kiwi one is

Anyway well done the Kiwis

Here is a vid of the latest race in full.

On Utube I found places where you could get live feeds but of course they are of little use to me due to the time difference. I need full replays.
