Coworker thought I Was Looking For Drugs....
« on: June 28, 2017, 05:11:30 PM »
Talking to myself at work, I said I was looking for "moly."
A coworker thought that meant the street drug "molly"
and things went downhill fast.

In reality I was looking for moly paste to lube a V7 spline shaft.  Hard to find now that Honda stopped making their famous "Honda 60."  It would be easier to find molly at a rave concert than moly disulfide grease.

Am I wrong?  Should I talk to the local hooker and ask for spline lube?

Sign, Re:"Should I talk to the local hooker and ask for spline lube?".......Be Careful, you want to use the proper quality lubricant that is appropriate for the type of metal its being used on... for example ,you dont want to use the same lubricant  made for a hardened  steel spline, to lubricate a rusty trombone!

geez Joe, should be easy to find moly grease, Any napa or certainly a heavy equipment dealer would have it. If you like I can stuff some in a plastic bag and post it down to ya, got a tube on the bench. Also Marine spline lube for out drives is the stuff.  Glad your getting some garage time in. :thumb:

What would worry me is that I had a co-worker next to me who assumed I was talking about some sort of "ecstasy" drug and knew what it was .... !!

NAPA sells a "sticky" red Lucas lube meant for splines and similar applications.   It's what I use on my splines.

That's how you know you are "out of touch" and rapidly morphing into Geezer-dom.    I have never heard of a street drug called "MOLLY!!"  (???)

I was having dinner with a woman and the topic turned to our ailments.  I mentioned that I was taking methotrexate for my autoimmune condition.  She left immediately, saying she didn't want to get mixed up with a meth addict.

I have a simpler fix for you since I haven't used 'moly' for decades in my Guzzis in any way with no regrets. I use general purpose (GP) grease for splines no matter what brand bike it is for my shaft drive bikes and never once have regretted it.  For Guzzi trannies, rear ends I have only used GL5 oil again with no regrets for maybe 200K miles of riding Guzzis for 30 years.   Frank Wedge (MGNOC) gave me a special badge for having ridden Guzzis for 100,000 miles 17 years ago.  Dang if I know where it is now.  :undecided:

Right now I have a `77 Convert, a `81 CX100, and a `04 750 Breva.  Have had a `71 Ambassador, '80 Convert, `87 Le Mans IV.  Some how they all survived without any moly.

Dave,
I was doing a search for a 40 to 60% moly paste, as opposed to the usual 10% moly lube.  The hi-moly paste is harder to find, and I wanted to give it a try.

Lannis, Wayne, and Rick,
In the past I used a quality thick grease on the shaft splines and it worked fine, but after reading some Honda/BMW threads about using 60% moly paste for splines, it caught my attention.  Those people were arguing about the necessary level of moly, the way we might argue about 10w-60 oil

David winz the innerneck for today for having to sit through at least part of a meal with a moron!

I do have to ask though. Are you particularly wild eyed and scabrous?

I would have gone with "scabacious" myself.  And in defense of Pete's question, except for the wild eyes and scabs, I resemble his remark closely.   :afro:

I use aerosol chain lube with a plastic tube.  Give the splines a good spray regularly.  My drive shaft is exposed on both ends though.   The cardan joints on my bike have grease fittings.  Easy to grease.
